Hi, I'm quite new here, just bought my first bike at the weekend :D

I need to get a disc lock for when I park at work (at home it will be kept in the garage) just wonder where is the best place to shop online? I do have a few bike shops in my area but they only seem to stock Oxford stuff and what little research I have done indicates they don't make the best stuff! Also are the locks 'one size fits all' I've only got a little Suzuki 125

I bought mine from a local motorbike shop as different bikes fit different locks depending on the size of the disc. The most likely to be a universal fit are ones such as this

as they have a small pin that goes through the disc which clicks in and out as you press it home or unlock it.

I had one like that with an alarm, but outside it kept going off as the bike moved in the wind. So I would recommend you get such a lock and use it inside your garage as the alarm rather than security will be a better deterrent. Do not assume your bike is safe in a garage, you should lock it there as well.

I now use one like this

as it is far more secure. Get a Thatcham rated one as that may help with insurance premiums. Oxford do do Thatcham rated ones. But, check it will fit the disc first.

I would also recommend you chain your bike to something, particularly parked outside. How big the chain needs to be depends on how visible your bike is where it is parked.

Thanks for all the suggestions (and tips!) I think I might get this one

The garage door is incredibly loud but I suppose a chain would be a good idea for when no one is home as the neighbours probably wouldn't notice someone opening the door. Not sure I would want to take it to work to chain the bike up as they seem quite heavy? Where I'm parking my bike is M/C parking with really busy roads/pavements on either side so I'm hoping it wouldn't be much of a target for thieves, especially when it's parked next to all the fancy sports bikes that also park there :D

I use one of these when out and about

so I can chain my bike to the railings many bike parking spaces now provide. It just makes it that bit harder for someone to lift your bike into a van in seconds and carry it off, easy with a 125.

I use a xena alarmed disk lock when I'm out and about, but at work even with a private carpark and CCTV I still chain it to the fence - too easy for some tw4t to lift it into a van for my liking.

I leave that chain attatched to the fence and use another one in the garage. None of these would stop a determined theif, but hopefully will make the majority of them look for something a bit less awkward

A disc lock is fine for a big heavy bike to stop it being wheeled away. The cheeky oiks will just pick up a 125 and carry it away. Use a chain to chain it to something 8-)
