Guest Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Now Autumn is well upon us and Winter not too far away, I'd still like to get out on the bike on the odd decent day we might get. However, I just cannot forget the day at the end of February when it was nice and sunny so decided to don the leathers and go for a spin. When me and my mate stopped for a glass of pop at a boozer, I'll NEVER forget how cold I was after a 60+ mile run. I'd managed to squeeze a t-shirt and sweatshirt under the leathers but I was still numb. So, I'd appreciate some recommendations for underlayer clothing so I can still wear the leathers even when the weather is a bit on the chilly side but still be warm(ish). Not talking about below zero temps, or frosty, but less than 10 degrees.Thanks,Andy. Quote
Big Stu Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I got some Underarmour Coldgear as a base layer - worked a treat so far. Thin enough to go under my work clothes too Quote
davefly76 Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I wear thermal base layers bought from an outdoor/hiking shop which do the trick, and usually cheaper than buying biker specific clothing but when its really cold I wear water/windproof textiles. Keeping the wind out is key. I forget the exact figures but 5 degrees @ 60mph = windchill factor of bloody freezing!! You can find windproof fleeces from the same shops that you may be able to fit under your jacket. Quote
Colin the Bear Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Winter leathers, summer leathers. Winter leathers 1 size bigger to make room for a jumper. Or Stick a bigger jacket over the top Quote
nman1 Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Try the Oxford "Chill Out" range. It`s worked for me over the last 4-5 winters. I sometimes double it up with my summer base layer which is extreamly thin. If very cold I`ll stick on a normal T shirt under the whole lot. More thin layers than just one tends to trap warm air better. Quote
dimmers Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 depends if you leathers have vents in them, or stretch panels that allow air to flow in?if you do, then you will still get cold even with a good base layer on. You will need to either wear a wind proof base layer, or a jacket over the top (a waterproof over jacket works well for me).but as others have said, underarmour are good (but expensive), so too are coldkillers.just make sure any base layer you were has good moisture wicking properties, as the combination of damp clothes (from sweat) and wind coming in through your vented jacket, is not a good combination. Guest Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Thanks for the replies guys, gave me a few options to look at.My leathers do have the stretch panels in them, but I reckon any decent baselayer is going to be better than none at all.So thanks again for the recommendations, I'll get checking them out.Andy Quote
Ingah Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Hein Gericke underlayers won the RiDE test. Quote
hedgehugger Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 I have a couple of pairs frank thomas antifreeze legging things. I wear them under my Draggin' camos and they work very well, huge difference. Quote
