donhuzayfa Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Hi guys, my engine keeps cutting at 3k revs, then cuts off below 3G revs, and hardly moves, added more fuel but still persists, as soon as it hits 3k it stays there, then cuts off...and I'm in the middle of nowhere. Quote
donhuzayfa Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 It's a thundercat, drove home using the choke, which was painful, could be the throttle cable, it was fine a few days ago, Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 not running below 3000 rpm sounds more like the pilot jets are blocked did you run it out of fuel or right to the bottom of reserve before refueling as it could of pulled some muck through from the bottom of the tank Quote
donhuzayfa Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 The low fuel light wasn't on, and there was some petrol when I looked into the tank, I somehow managed to drive it home with the choke (switching it on to increase revs and drive, switching off when slowing) the actual throttle was quite responsive but refused to go past 3k revs, at which point it would splutter, does this indicate pilots? Was told by someone that my carbs would need a clean in the future... Quote
donhuzayfa Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 It runs well BELOW but doesn't want to go past 3k revs Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 i misread you first post it is running ok on the pilot jets but not once it is getting onto main jet.has anyone messed with the carbs trying to adjust them at all because if it is running better with the choke on then it sounds like the mixtures could be wrong as choke reduces the amount of air being drawn in making the bike run richer, have you changed the exhaust end can or the air filter recently for non standard type? Quote
donhuzayfa Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 Changed the exhaust to a slip-on, no air filter, had restrictor fitted, it's been running perfect thats what I dont undestand... Quote
Colin the Bear Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 It's cold out there, is the carb icing up?This myth about pulling muck from the bottom of the tank on a gravity fed system cracks me up. Where is this muck on speed bumps or when you brake.Problems arise through air locks and things gumming up as they dry or water being all that's left and freezing Quote

megawatt Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 You said "no air filter" !!! Put it back in ffs. Quote
donhuzayfa Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 There is an air filter, the original one,So if things have frozen up, how to defrost? Quote
Boro Jake Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Might be a stupid question but you have checked the chokes not sticking on? Should be on the left hand side of ur bike near the carbs Quote
donhuzayfa Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 If it does stick on, what would happen? I know that the choke has been playing up, but it works, it gives a little higher revs when activated, although if I keep in in the fully on position it doesn't stop going higher up the rev range, as in it just keeps going higher and higher. I'd suggest your chokes the problem, it should goto 3k rpm when activated and stay there Quote
donhuzayfa Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 I know the chokes a problem but apart from being a little weird I doubt it could altogether stop my bike from working? Quote
megawatt Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Yes it can. If you ask for advice, it's usually a good idea to take it. Unless you know better??? Quote
donhuzayfa Posted December 14, 2011 Author Posted December 14, 2011 Sorry I didn't mean that in an offensive way, so if it is sticking it needs oil? Also realized there's a kink in the choke cable which doesnt move the choke as it should, Quote
Colin the Bear Posted December 14, 2011 Posted December 14, 2011 Choke is just that. It chokes off the air. Your fuel intake remains the same and so it runs "rich". This causes the spark plug to get covered in carbon. This is the carbon from the hydrocarbon fuel that cannot burn due to lack of air by being choked. This deposit builds to a point where it interferes with the spark that ignites the fuel air mix, giving poor running and mis fires and all sorts of hicups. Eventualy the plug gets wet and the engine stops. All parts need to be well maintained. A kink in the choke cable will cause knock on problems that will also need to be fixed as well as the choke cable. Quote
donhuzayfa Posted December 15, 2011 Author Posted December 15, 2011 Thanks Colin, so clean plugs, change choke cable, then if all is not well, do the carbs! Quote
Boro Jake Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 Remove the choke cable and make sure this is fully pushed in then try starting it Choke engaged http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/390382_2721275904813_1044535061_33023241_631682277_n.jpgDisengagedhttp://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/390011_2721273064742_1044535061_33023240_1650216288_n.jpgThis will be on the left hand side of ur bike.
