hi folks having my first big problem with my bike, it is an L reg gsx 600f.

The bike has been running fine started first press every day until the recent run of bad weather.

I left the bike sitting for just 2 or 3 weeks then when i went back to start it, it turns over but wont fire.

I have charged the battery quite a few times but still nothing, i get the odd splutter and puffs of smoke out the exhaust but wont fire up ?

Looking for some advice on what i could try first, spark plugs, battery etc.

thanks in advance

Are you using the choke, is the choke working properly?

I have the same problem with mine if it sits for 3-4 weeks. Just persevere with it. The carbs have probably just emptied themselves and its taking a while to get going. Mine tends to be worse if I've left it on the side stand rather than the centre stand.

Replacing the plugs may help (I have no idea how long mine have been in there) but if the battery is turning over and not labouring then it sounds fine.

When it does start running try not to use too much throttle straight away. Let it run on its own on the choke. It may sound a bit rough but it will sort itself out eventually.

ps Woo Hoo for someone else on here with a GSX!! :D :D

hi dave thanks for the reply, the choke should be working fine it was last time it started, the bike has had a problem with the fuel valve since i got it so i have had to leave it set to on constant to keep the fuel flowing, i have always turned it off when i stop, but was wondering if possibly some fuel could have been left in the carb when i last parked it and some how have blocked or choked it ?

There should always be a little bit of fuel in the carb to help it start but it may well have "flooded" and got too much in. Btw, I always keep my fuel tap set to the "on" position. The only time I've had to touch it was when I ran out and had to switch to reserve.

On mine, which is a 2004 model, I have a 'prime' position on the fuel tap, check to see if you have this also, and if so, put it on that for a couple of mins and then try starting it :thumb:

Cold weather hates batteries. Charge battery to 13.5 degrees and try it. Check battery volts again after a cold snap?

hi guys thanks for all the help, i think i may have found the problem just need some confirmation.

When i was installing the new spark plugs, i followed the ignition leads from the plugs to the coils and found that at the coil end the leads seem far to loose, they don`t seem secure in anyway they just pull out with very little pressure ?

Should they be that loose all the ones i have seen on ebay seem fixed into the coil ?

Posted

They shouldn't be loose enough to fall out, do the have metal sleeves on the ends, if so can you spread these slightly so they grip the inside of the coil better?

I'm sure mine are sealed into the coils on mine, and not removable :?:

No hodgy they they don`t have end clips, when you pull them out it is just the bare wire, could i just get new ends or should i just get all new coils

Posted

On mine, the wires are sealed within the coil

New coils are quite expensive, try getting just new wires?

is it possible just to put new ends on the ht leads i have ?

If not i can get a brand new coil with leads but not end cap for £35 each or a really clean 2nd hand pair again without end caps both for £30

Posted

Not sure, have you checked to see if the ends are stuck inside the coils?

Posted

No not yet going to remove the coils tommorow, i am suprised that it is all four ht leads that have lost the ends i would have thought i would have had problems with the bike before this.

If the ends are in the coils is it possible to reattach them ?

Posted

I would imagine they just crimp around the outer plastic coating of the wire, so you shoulb be able to put them back on, hopefully.

Thanks for all the help folks got it going today :)

Put in the new spark plugs, cleaned the cap ends and bodged together the leads to the coils and got it started, old coils are too bad to be fixed so got a new pair from ebay should arrive by the end of the week and be properly back on the road, cant wait !

Thanks again
