Sigil Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Just drained the oil from my bike (honda cbr600f 02) it needed to be done, the oil was very black. The problem if any i expected was the oil filter being stuck but that was fine. The problem was the cowboy who last put the oil drain plug back on, they didn't use a standard washer but instead it looks like they drilled a hold in another washer and forced it on, now i cant get the old washer off...The old washer held the last load of oil in the bike perfectly fine but im not sure if i should go get a new drain plug and use the standard washer?Or should i just use the old drain plug and the home made washer?Or should i get my dremel and try and hack the washer of without damaging the threads? Left the bike slowly dripping in the garage and would like to sort it out asap Thanks Quote
davefly76 Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Whats wrong with just putting the drain plug back in as it is? Some bolts do come with a washer attached, it could be that type.. Or get another one from a Honda dealer.. Quote
Sigil Posted January 10, 2012 Author Posted January 10, 2012 think i might just pop it back on then. If it dose leak i can aways drain it into a clean container then go get a new plug and put it back in Quote
Stu Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 put it back in and see chances are its a plug with washer anyway or the crush washer has stuck on it will only drip a little so clean the area really well once back together and keep a check on it and park the bike on a clean bit of garage Quote
Colin the Bear Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Some drain plugs use a copper washer, so it squashes and seals. It's recommended to replace these when changing the oil. I never have and have never had a problem. If it ain't broke , it don't need fixing. It probably is a squashy type washer/seal. Poke it back in and don't overtighten it. Quote
Roadtorque Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 washer on drain plugs are usually copper or alloy & tend to spread when tightened to give a good seal, think you will find it's the correct washer, it's just spread on the bolt,, should be good for a few times of use Quote
Sigil Posted January 11, 2012 Author Posted January 11, 2012 Cheers guys, oil is now changed and been on a nice ride Bike seems to be abit more happy now Still the cct to go and i will have one happy bike i toped the oil after running the bike before i left and when i got back the oil level was slightly over max... I think it might just be thermal expansion but will check tomorrow. If it is slightly over the max level is it ok to leave it or do i need to remove some oil somehow? Thanks Quote

Thanks If you topped it up just after your run then it will be over the top, cause all the oil from round the engine drains down when cool Top up when cold Quote
Colin the Bear Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 Mine recommends to run the engine for a few minutes , let it stand for 2 mins and check level in sight glass. If you check it cold the low level light comes on after a few mins. Follow the book for your model Quote
