No you can buy 10w40 semi synthetic oil for bikes from most bike garages and places like halfords.

I believe there are a few different additives in bike oils, I believe it's because it lubes the gearbox too.

I had problems with clutch slip using a cheap but fancy car oil in the bike. No problems with bog standard car oil tho. Cars run a dry clutch and most bikes run a wet clutch. It's the oils like the old Magnatech with the clingy when cold additives that cause the clutch to slip till the oil gets hot. With the price of oil these days it's worth giving it a go. It won't do any damage and if you do get clutch slip you can sort it with another oil change. 8-)

i read the thread on oil,,,,,,,,,,,basically says one can use the car oil in the bike,

i'll still use the bike specific, hm, , cos there isnt a great deal of difference in price, especially from halfrauds

Never put car oil in your bike, bikes have a wet clutch(most anyway) and bike oil is designed to lubricate your gearbox as well as your engine components, for the sake of tenner a L which buys you castrol synthetic it just doesn't worth risk having a ruined gearbox and slipping clutch.

What do you expect to happen in 500 miles FFS!!! Oil is the biggest moving part in the engine, you change it once or twice a year. Buy the best that you can afford. If it specifies semi, use semi not fully synth. Use bike oil, get ripped off, but have peace of mind

Paying too much keeps me up at night. So no peace of mind there then.

Never believe sales blurb and hype.

Synthetic...semi synthetic...sounds very technical and scientific, but it all comes out of a hole in the ground.

WW1 aero engines were lubed with castor oil.

The most important thing about oil is that you have some in. 8-)
