Guest Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 First of hi everyone!I am currently living in Indonesia- I have been here 6 months and have been riding the whole time. When I got here it was the first time I rode on the road (I had an off-road bike when I was very young, like 10-14 and then stopped riding). I started with an automatic and then moved to a geared bike. I am 22 and probably spent 2 hoursish riding a day since I got here, if anyone on the forum has been to Indonesia and driven, you will know its a craaaaaaaazy place!I want to get a bike in the UK when I return, I read I can take an accelerated access course? I'm not too keen on being on L plates if I can just take a test- is this possible? By the time I come back I will probably have a year on road experience. Also if I have passed a car theory do I need to take a seperate one for a bike test?Hope to hear soon!Paul Quote
Daytona Paul Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 You first need to do Compulsory Basic Training (CBT). Then you would need to do a Theory and Hazard Perception Test (bike related). Then you can do a DAS course (Direct Access Scheme) on completion of which would enable you to ride any bike that takes your fancy Quote
OhJay Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 If you've got that much experience then you can probably do it all in a couple of days. You can get a full licence within a week from no experience if you really want to.You will need to do a separate theory test for your bike and I'd suggest you get this out the way as soon as you get home. You need it before doing your final tests and if you're going to do it all in a couple of days you'll need it in advance. You'll need to do a CBT but if you've got that much experience it'll be over within a day and most of it will probably feel really patronising but they've got to go through it.If you speak to the school you end up going to and say what your situation is they'll probably suggest a three or four day course. Day 1 will be the CBT, days 2 and 3 getting you ready for the tests and then the tests on day 4.Speak to an instructor, they'll have the best idea of times and timings. Quote
MattB Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Just remember that your instructor will have to beat all those bad habbits out of you that you have picked up riding in Indonesia. What size bike are you riding? If you want to cut down on time for a DAS course, and your instructor is up for it, you can jump in the deep end and do the CBT on a 500. Saves a days training doing it on a 125 then converting, but you both have to be confident! Quote
Guest Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Ok this all sounds great, thanks so much for all your help. I am only on a 150cc bike over here (which is actually a big bike for Indonesia) the maximum allowed are 250ccs. So a 500cc will probably feel very heavy and powerful for me.Also exactly what MattB said- I have some appalling habits from driving here already. There are just no rules compared to England, and although it makes you think very fast on your feet and drive exceptionally defensively- its still going to be a shock!!Thanks for all the advice guys! Hati-hati di jalan-jalan semua orang!! Quote
Tango Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Welcome to the Forum mate...... CBT should be a doddle for you.....it's mainly about basic motorcycle control..... Quote
Terryr555 Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Oh come on.....You've got to translate!!!!!!Don't leave us hanging! Quote
Guest Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 Haha Terry its just Bahasa Indonesia for 'take care (be careful) on the roads everyone' So if I pass the CBT on a 500cc I just have a licence ready to drive? Thats it?Better than the procedure over here. Show the bike rental/shop your driving licence (car) and off you go! Or if you dont have one pay $20 and get on the roads! If anyone wants an interesting trip- try Indonesia, but its scary on the roads haha! Quote
OhJay Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 With a CBT you're still a learner legally, it's essentially just validated your learner provision. Up until that point all you've proved is that you can fill in a form Car learners have to have an experienced driver in the car with them at all times but since you can't do that on a bike you have to prove to someone qualified you're safe to be let out.Regardless what you do your CBT on, legally you're only allowed to ride a 125 on L's on your own. You can ride something bigger as long as there's an instructor there and they are in constant radio contact with you. Most places do CBT on 125 since that's what you'll be riding afterwards and you don't want to give someone with no experience a nice big 200kilo bike to drop on themselves However if you're good enough already and going to be going straight onto to an intensive course with view to doing DAS at the end of the week then some places will do the CBT on the 500 so you don't have to go through a couple of hours getting used to the changes between the 125 and the 500. Exactly - CBT on a 500 if it is day one of a DAS course, and if your instructor is up for it. Quote
