Lumor_uk Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Bike failed mot last year so I got him to replace the bearings which had popped out. I supplied the bearings. Anyway got round to changing the chain and the damn bearings fell out in to my hand. They fit snug but just not like you would think and stay in. I'm fitting another wheel with the bearings intact so keeping them in.what I'm bothered about is he let me ride away like that! And he's busted my bearings using a screw driver instead of a bearing press. Could the actual wheel hub be knackered too now as I've ben riding around like that for 9 months. Quote
Stu Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 its either the wrong bearings or the hub is stuffed one of the other! Quote
Colin the Bear Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I have a hub like this. A little play showed up on the MoT test. The bearing one side had become a little loose in its housing. There is no damage to the hub thankfully as it's a shaft drive and drum brake and looks expensive I cured the problem by centre punching lightly three times equidistantly around the bearing housing and refitting with bearing fit fluid. No play for last three MoT's.I've fitted hundreds of bearings and never used a press. Using the old bearings to tap the new in or a suitable drift and care is fine.If the housing was knackered you'd know just looking. The difference between a tight fit and them dropping out can be less than .001".Bearing fit fluid, like thread lock, will hold them in if the play is small. A little burr with a centre punch will take up the slack if the hub isn't damaged. Quote
Roadtorque Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Dom't see how you can blame him that long after the event,, would have thought you have noticed any problem long before now,,,,,,So fit your new chain & bearings, doing it yourself gives you the satisfaction the jobs done right Quote
Lumor_uk Posted May 17, 2012 Author Posted May 17, 2012 I thought my chain breaker was a riveter as well. I'm gutted. Quote
