Guest Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Hi,Hoping someone can point me in the right direction here.Bought a 1996 ZX6R recently that has been streetfightered.Previous owner admitted the engine had been running rough. A change of sparkplugs hadn't helped and he didn't think there was a coil problem.Bike is inconsistent with the problem. Sometimes I can start it and it runs fine then starts missing after a short while. Sometimes it runs rough then it will run smooth for awhile. It will do this several times on a 10 mile run. I find that lower revs definitely makes the problem worse. If I am on the motorway doing a decent speed it will mostly run OK - until you wind on and off the throttle then there is a massive lag before the revs pick up again.I took the tank off to have a look at the wiring - was also going to have a look at the carbs but a previous owner has rounded off the screws holding the covers on. Didn't want to strip them just yet in case there is a more obvious answer. The bike has an after market can on - a motad viper - could this cause these problems.Plus it doesn't matter if the engine is either hot or cold - it will still start missing.I can get by with basic bike mechanics but this has me stumped - plus I don't have a lot of tools or equipment to check electrics etc.Does anyone have any ideas? mattycoops43 Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Intermittent problems, I have had exactly the same with my XJ. It will be fuel related, check for crap in the carbs, blocked jets, does it have a paper fuel filter? they are rubbish, mine was letting clods of old paper through into the fuel pump and carbs.Float height in the carbs, and balance too. Guest Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 The fuel filter looked okay - but it looks as though I am going to have to strip the fuel system down and have a proper look. Thanks for the tip. Quote
Stu Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Does it have a fuel pump? If so check it out I know some older zx6's suffer with the fuel pump not sure which year though Also check wiring connections as it could be just a loose wire And as above check fuel system Quote
