gandy666 Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 can anyone tell me if there is an easy way to monitor progress when cleaning carburettors?the only way I can see whether my cleaning has made any difference or fixed the idling issue is to fit carbs back into the engine and start the bike up. issue is around idling, so i'll be clearing the pilot jet amongst others.just wondering if there is an easier way since adding and removing all that rubber, especially around the airbox is hard work and cant see I can get the carbs out and in without taking it off. worried that all that movement will result in a tear at some pointI intend to remove them and clean out so in effect I could add and remove them multiple times in one day.Is the mantra 'do it right first time'?how do know whether I've done it right without refit and bike stat?thanks Quote
Weebl Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 can anyone tell me if there is an easy way to monitor progress when cleaning carburettors? Not quite sure what you are asking? You take them apart, you can see all the gunk that is sat in float bowls etc, you clean it all out, spray carb cleaner down all the drillings and castings and through all the removed jets and associated bits.It is then clean, you don't really have to monitor what percentage you have cleaned it, it starts dirty, and ends up clean? If you do a thorough job of the clean and it does not fix your idling issues, then it is probably not carb dirt that caused it. Quote
gandy666 Posted July 2, 2012 Author Posted July 2, 2012 ok the thing is my bowls are clean as are the main jets.assumption is we think the pilot jets are clogged as no idle. suppose it makes sense as everything else works, just not idle. have spark, fuel and ok when on the throttle.bit of an operation to get carbs out and back in again - wondering if there's a way of verifying they'll work on refit, before refitting.maybe a stupid question on my part - just clean everything then put back together yes - but if no dirt in the pilot jets, then what? Stu Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 yeah its a case of clean and put it back together what bike is it for? have you adjusted the carbs up as per manual? pilot screws out the correct number of turns etc? idle screw been turned up? Quote
gandy666 Posted July 6, 2012 Author Posted July 6, 2012 have turned the idle screw right up and will try at the weekend. didn't know the pilot jet was adjustable.bit out of my depth really - tis a GSX 1100g - cant even see how to get the throttle cable off as its deep in the middle of the carbs.around the forums the view is move carbs to left to get them off.manual helpfully says 'remove cables' with no description on how to Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 to remove the cables from the carbs you will have to losen the adjuster off on the top of the bracket that the cable passes through so you can lift it out of the bracket and then remove it from the throttle unit that turns Quote
