Guest Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Hi im not sure if im posting this in the right section.I bought my bike yesterday (private) and after riding home, 15-20 minutes from home. I stalled the bike and could not get going. The bike starts, and revs, however does not move, i ou the bike in gear release the clutch and nothing (feel no bite on the clutch).Im not sure what to do, ive been told it might be the clutch and need to replace the clutch plates, i have no idea what im doing, even with the haynes manual. Wondering if somebody would be willing to assist me, anyone who live near NE4, fenham. I would be ever gratefull.Im so angry at myself at the moment, bike broke down on the day i bought it. Quote
davefly76 Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 I would have thought that if it goes in to first without stalling then the clutch is working ok. What happens when you release the clutch lever? Can you release it all the way and let go, and still the bike doesn't move? What about other gears? Can you put the bike in first gear, without the engine running and then push the bike forward? Quote

When i release the clutch lever nothing happens, well the bike tries to move a cm or so, but nothing more. i can press it all the way and let go, and go back to normal position, i can push the bike when it in first gear, without engine running.thanks for the help Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 what bike is it? and its strange that it was riding ok then after stalling it wasnt, have you checked the chain tension? Quote
GazW Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Put the bike on it's centre stand, put two planks of wood under it if the rear wheel touches the floor as you'll need it clear, follow the clutch cable to an arm on the top of the engine casing, put it in first and using the rubber base of a hammer handle push that arm away from the clutch cable, if it bites and the rear wheel spins then your clutch cable is f**ked. If not then it's probably inside, eliminate the simplest options first.. Quote
pointblank0 Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 You shouldn't be able to push it in first gear. Sounds like it's not going into gear. Please don't take this the wrong way, but have you ridden a geared bike much before? It may be just something you are doing (or nor doing) causing the problems. Maybe worth calling whoever you bought it off too to see if it has had any similar problems recently and the fixes for it. Quote
Tango Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Is the cable adjusted correctly.....if it's too tight it won't release far enough for the clutch to bite. So check the adjustments first before thinking of a more complicated possibility..... Quote
Adam Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 ^^^^ +1 on that, its normally the simple things that we over look that are actually causing the problem! You shouldn't be able to move the bike (only backwards and forwards slightly) if it's in gear, are you sure it's not in and you haven't changed up or down? It shouldn't start unless it's in neutral anyway so that might give you a clue. Quote
Fozzie Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Try another gear?Sounds like the cable but if it just conked and it goes into gear without stalling then doesnt go then it sounds like either the clutch or gearbox has had it Quote
davefly76 Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 sounds like either the clutch or gearbox has had it +1Thats what I thought. Sounds like there is lack of drive from the gearbox. possible internal fault in gearbox or the front sprocket. Quote
oslin06 Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Check the front sprocket has not come off the drive shaft, you will need to remove the cover to see this if it has not then I would take the cover off the others side and check the clutch, if that looks ok then it will be the gear box, I would contact the old owner to see what he/she is prepaired to do about it, if any thing? that will depend if he/she is a nice person or not, perhaps you should do this before taking anything off,If you were anywhere near Kings Lynn I would come and have a look for you but if you are in London it is a bit far to come sorry.Keith Quote
