Bumped it it ran for a while very rough tho abit of smoke not much and sum flames from exhaust now won't start at al.first big bike any help appropriate

Sounds lik fueling... is it carbs or injection?

I would take it to a garage if you know nothing about bikes.

I would say the carb needs cleaning, perhaps a carb clean and fresh fuel

Is it manual choke? If so, have you got the choke set right? Sounds like you've flooded it.

go with the simple things first like replacing spark plug before you go taking carb apart or at the very least remove the spark plug that will tell you if the engine had flooed or not

If you've flooded it you've either got to leave it to dry out or try to start it with the throttle open to the max. Back firing and all that stuff sounds like spark probs to me....igniting unspent fuel erratically.....plug, leads, coil etc. Just my opinion though....

Flooding sounds likely - flames and smoke probably excess unburned fuel.

When you picked it up it's probable that it had already been run to warm it up but it's going to need the choke to start it from cold. There's also an acquired technique for kicking over engines!

From a thread about starting KLR 600's (apparently they can be a bit reluctant in the cold) .......

'Kick slowly till you feel resistance, then gently push thru the resistance, then return the kicker all the way to the top. Then with a smooth, swift motion, kick down. No need to go crazy. If it doesn't work, try it again. Madly kicking won't get you anywhere, you have to use the procedure outlined above'

Did the person you bought it from give you any tips - some bikes can be a bit quirky

i would of said either spark problem or the automatic decompression lever might be sticking slightly holding exhaust valve open hence the back fire.

Good point EAB....could well be that.... 8-)

Thanks people I think I was trying to hard to kick this bike over.msybe too many times and flooded it (novice) :( that's what im hoping.like I said I got it back with no problems. But battery was flat due to it being too small.so erratic kicking and no no-how may be the issue

Posted

is it not fitted with electric start ? if it is then you need to check battery to make sure its the right one and that its well charged and holding its charge

Glad you got it starting OK..... 8-)

Smoking from the exhaust could be either running too rich or burning oil. Generally if the smoke is black the mixture is too rich....and if the smoke is blue it's burning oil. If the bike was stood for a while it could be that the piston rings have stuck and you're burning oil.......or the carb is cr*pped up and your running too rich. Check the colour and smell of the smoke to giude you to where the problem could be..... :)

or if its been stood it could just be condensation in the exhaust burning off and you may think its just smoke

It is a blue colour when rev its black and smells.. Serious. Prob or not? Thanks people.the right up about how to kick start was helpfull kicks first time now :-]

make sure the choke is off fully and ride ait around for an hour see if the smoke clears it mgiht have residue fuel in the exhaust and carbon build up its slowly buring off
