shakeyboy25 Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Hi bought this bike yesterday road it home it was fine.tried it today was very hard to start when finally did it wouldn't really idle then wen I pulled throttle back it cut out.then really wouldn't fire up at all. Bumped it it ran for a while very rough tho abit of smoke not much and sum flames from exhaust now won't start at al.first big bike any help appropriate Quote
Nogin Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Sounds lik fueling... is it carbs or injection?I would take it to a garage if you know nothing about bikes. Quote
shakeyboy25 Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 its carb it rode back fine I have bin trying to kick it alot Quote
Nogin Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 I would say the carb needs cleaning, perhaps a carb clean and fresh fuel Quote
Tango Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Is it manual choke? If so, have you got the choke set right? Sounds like you've flooded it. Quote
shakeyboy25 Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Yeh its a manual choke seems to work well.uf its flooded will it still need a carb clean. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 go with the simple things first like replacing spark plug before you go taking carb apart or at the very least remove the spark plug that will tell you if the engine had flooed or not Quote
Tango Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 If you've flooded it you've either got to leave it to dry out or try to start it with the throttle open to the max. Back firing and all that stuff sounds like spark probs to me....igniting unspent fuel erratically.....plug, leads, coil etc. Just my opinion though.... Quote
shakeyboy25 Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Ok thanks for the help. Do U no if these bikes are ok normaly Quote
Bonniebird Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Flooding sounds likely - flames and smoke probably excess unburned fuel. When you picked it up it's probable that it had already been run to warm it up but it's going to need the choke to start it from cold. There's also an acquired technique for kicking over engines! From a thread about starting KLR 600's (apparently they can be a bit reluctant in the cold) .......'Kick slowly till you feel resistance, then gently push thru the resistance, then return the kicker all the way to the top. Then with a smooth, swift motion, kick down. No need to go crazy. If it doesn't work, try it again. Madly kicking won't get you anywhere, you have to use the procedure outlined above'Did the person you bought it from give you any tips - some bikes can be a bit quirky Quote

shakeyboy25 Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Like I said tango I Brant it back only 6 miles but it was fine. No probe its since I got it back.thanks for help. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 i would of said either spark problem or the automatic decompression lever might be sticking slightly holding exhaust valve open hence the back fire. Quote

shakeyboy25 Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Thanks people I think I was trying to hard to kick this bike over.msybe too many times and flooded it (novice) that's what im hoping.like I said I got it back with no problems. But battery was flat due to it being too small.so erratic kicking and no no-how may be the issue Quote
Tango Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Well good luck with it mate....hopefully it is just that..... Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 is it not fitted with electric start ? if it is then you need to check battery to make sure its the right one and that its well charged and holding its charge Quote
shakeyboy25 Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 Are these bikes ok bikes wasn't expecting to much for age but.not too bad are they? Quote
shakeyboy25 Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 there isn't much room for a bigger battery but I'll go in garage tomorrow. And ask. And ten had electric start Quote
shakeyboy25 Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 But starts first kick now runs fine but is abit Smokey any 1 no why aparantly it had been sat for a while Quote
Tango Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Glad you got it starting OK..... Smoking from the exhaust could be either running too rich or burning oil. Generally if the smoke is black the mixture is too rich....and if the smoke is blue it's burning oil. If the bike was stood for a while it could be that the piston rings have stuck and you're burning oil.......or the carb is cr*pped up and your running too rich. Check the colour and smell of the smoke to giude you to where the problem could be..... Quote
Stu Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 or if its been stood it could just be condensation in the exhaust burning off and you may think its just smoke Quote
shakeyboy25 Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 It is a blue colour when rev its black and smells.. Serious. Prob or not? Thanks people.the right up about how to kick start was helpfull kicks first time now :-] Quote
shakeyboy25 Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 it smells like a bomb fire too Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 make sure the choke is off fully and ride ait around for an hour see if the smoke clears it mgiht have residue fuel in the exhaust and carbon build up its slowly buring off Quote
