Tiggie Posted January 30, 2013 Posted January 30, 2013 sad state of affairs when two sets of trained mechanics both said you "need a whole new engine" when all they needed to do is clean up the bolt hole... Mechanics seem to have lost the ability to repair stuff, and just relay on replacing stuff with expensive new parts. real shame.. seems to happen with a lot if stuff nowadays. My boiler was stuffed for 3 weeks in December, we had boiler cover so gave them a ring, 1 week later engineer came out, had a quick look and said it needed a new ignition board.Another week later different engineer turned up, fitted board and boiler still wouldn't work. He said it needed a new PCB and off he went.Another week passed, another new guy, fitted board, still broken. He had a good look for about half an hour and said it was either the thermistor or the safety cut off switch. Off he went.By now I'd had no heating or hot water for over 3 weeks and wasn't waiting. I got the part numbers online and went to a plumbers trade store. Parts cost less than £20. Got home fitted them to find boiler still knacked!!I'd had enough and took boiler apart & did my own diagnosis (before its said I didn't play with anything gas related, that had been checked and was fine)Turned out to be the piezo ignition wire wasn't returning a signal to boiler to say it was lit. Took wire out cleaned it up, replaced and all was working.Cancelled boiler cover that day. Good news is the old PCB was left with me which will be going on eBay when I get round to it Quote
