mailee66 Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 A friend of mine has just bought a Triumph Daytona but it has a problem, starting. it is the T595 with the 900cc fuel injected motor and is fitted with a Datatool alarm. When he first tried to start it it wouldn't fire and sounded like it was turning over slowly. After flicking the kill switch off and on it struck straight up and ran fine. Then turning it off it refused to start again? This time flicking the kill switch off and on made no difference. He took the kill switch apart to see if it was the contacts but they were clean and bright. After putting it back together again it struck up again but after turning it off again and trying it this morning it wouldn't start again! Has anyone got any idea what the problem might be? He has ordered a new battery just in case it is this that is the problem as it looks like it is the original on it and the bike is a 98 model and we thought maybe the battery was starting to break down and not supply enough power for starting. TIA. Quote
Tango Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 These bikes need a decent battery to start them......and trying to start them with a b*ggered battery can stuff the Starter Sprag clutch....which is mucho expensivo.......so my advice to him would be the leave it until he gets the new battery...... mailee66 Posted June 27, 2013 Author Posted June 27, 2013 Thanks Tango. He got the new battery today and it was the same. Someone mentioned to him that it could be the sensor on the kick stand so he slapped it up and down again and it started! He ran it around for a while and then it suddenly stopped and wouldn't start again?? I personally think it is the Datatool alarm system fitted to it and he is looking into removing it from the bike. Problem is he needs the bike for a new job in Derby on Monday so he is panicking a bit. Quote
Stu Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 if its turning over I doubt its the alarm if the immobilizer cuts in it wont even turn over as thats one of the circuits it immobilizes Quote
Tango Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 So.....are you sure it's not just the Side stand switch that's had it? Although it should start if it's in neutral......and most Triumphs need the clutch pulled in as well.....but I guess if it's turning over these are probably OK...... Is the MIL (malfunction indicator light) on?There's a free program called TuneECU that you can run on a laptop and connect to the bike with a VAG cable to interrogate all the sensors and to read any error codes......but this isn't going to be much help to him if he needs it fixing before Monday. When it died were any lights on or did everything just go off? Quote
mailee66 Posted June 27, 2013 Author Posted June 27, 2013 No there were no lights on the dash it just died. We are sure it is an electrical problem as it will just turn over without firing and then when he's left it and twiddled a few switches it fires up straight away? First time it did it we thought we had flooded it and took the plugs out to check it (what a ball ache that was!) and sure enough all the plugs were soaking. He is going to have another look over the weekend as it is chucking it down at the moment again! Quote
acting_strange Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 What about the reggie?/...This happened to me on my SV it just died but would turn over ok...? Quote
