Battery replacement

Hey peoples

Ive been thinking about this, and i thought id ask everyones opinion.,

Replacing the bikes lead acid battery with a lighter, smaller, more capacitance and higher amps output battery.. something like a LiPo??

I have a some 4S lipo's, 14.4v nominal voltage batteries. 5000mah 45C (capable of discharging 45 times its capacitance, for those who didnt know).. That means these batteries are capable of putting out upto 225 amps burst.. Which would be more than enough to crank the little starter motor and not bother the battery..

My theoretic problem is charging..

As Lipo's require to be balance charged to get a full and even 3.7v (4.2v when fully charged)..

Also would my Zenier diode stop a LiPo over charging too? as it does with the bike battery..

Obviously the stator wouldnt be capable of charging the LiPo to full, as full charge is 16.8, when DC output from a reg/rec is 14v but even at half charge, the LiPo will still be above 12v, just like a fully charged Bike Battery would be..

So would still supply a stable 12v to my electrics..

any thoughts?

My bike battery is screwed, and i currently dont have 20+ quid to buy another..

and i have stacks of LiPo batteries here for my RC cars..

just a thought

Sell the RC batteries, and buy a bike battery!!

lot simpler than trying to get a bike to charge an RC battery... Also, have you see what a Lipo can do when it goes wrong?? BOOOM!!!!

Thats just rolling stories...

Ive had many of LiPo's go "bang" on me, Mostly all been due to crashes at BRCA races.

LiPo's dont explode... they puff out a nice cloud of black spoke and then set on-fire..

But not always the fire...

Ive had fun in the past with hammering a nail into them, or charging them at a stupid rate, I even charged it via 230 mains once, directly to the battery, it just puffed extremely fast and the casing burst open giving a bit cloud of smoke.. No fire or "explosion"...

Its just all make belief because people say "LiPo's are very dangerous"... when actually, Nicad and Nimh batteries are more dangerous..

Id rather the soft LiPo casing split and have a fire, than a NimH cell overheating and exploding, and they do literally explode, because the excessive gasses inside a metal cased cell due to chemical reaction..

My Drill is Li-Ion, And so is all my battery operated power tools in fact.. they require alot of power, and they dont go "bang".....

Yep I do too, but I bet they all use the correct purpose built charger, not some dodgy makeshift job like you are proposing to use on your bike.

Also they are corectly rated and are purpose built for the job.

Same can't be Said for what you are thinking of doing!!

No doubt the charging circuitry alone will cost your more is parts and time than a new purpose built bike battery.

I sometimes wish that could be my bike :D

Dont get me wrong, i love it and i want to modify it so that its personal to my taste,

But with the constant problems im having no doubt because its taiwanese, just makes me want to see it go up in flames and claim on insurance :D
