Gazza7682 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Hi all.I am set to paint and spray my frame (from a can). Now I just went to see how much sandblasting costs and the guy there tried to sell me the coating of the frame too which is more than I want to spend. He did then say it would be more solid than cold spraying it and it wouldnt chip as quick blah blah blah.My question is this true and to what extent would it be easier to chip? Also what would you guys do?I am going to put a few undercoats on and also a few coats of the black. Thanks in advanceGareth Quote
GazW Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 If you can stretch to powder coating, I'd get that done. It's baked in an oven and becomes like a hard plastic coating. Much more durable. Quote
klingelton Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 it's my understanding that after you factor in several tins of rattle can, and blasting - powder coating comes out at a similar price! I'd go with powder coating any day, Quote
Stu Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 If you paint you will end up doing it again in a year if that with powder coated it's a once only job and well worth it Quote
Gazza7682 Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Thanks guys. How much is it normally for a frame? The guy said 100 then added the swingarm and it costs an extra 50. Sounds a bit steep if he is doing the frame anyway. Or am I just tight? Hehe Quote
klingelton Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 it's between 70 and 100 for the frame and 30 - 50 for the swing arm. that depends on material as a metallic finish will cost a bit more. Quote
Gazza7682 Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Just after a normal black finish thanks guys. Much appreciated Quote
Chrissb6 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 It a no brainer Mate! There's no way you will match the finish or durability of a powder coat paint. Quote
Joeman Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Powder coating every time!dont arse about with rattle cans, they are messy and when spraying something like a frame you waste most of the paint as it sprays right past the target! Quote
Ricky Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I wouldn't even consider spray painting a frame at all, ever.Powder coating is just a 100 times better you can accidentally scuff it while putting the bike back together and a bit of polish and the scratch comes right out where as paint would just chip it and leave horrible marks.Powder coat it!
