rennie Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 hello and welcome please put your location in your profile and say hello in the newbies section Yes! my partner Sue is on a CBT, she can insure her 125 finebut she also has a Fazer600 ready for later, we can't insure that forher so have had to register/insure it as my second bike!By far the easiest way is to go through a school and use their bikes. You would only be able to ride the Ninja with an approved DAS instructor anyway! Tango Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Welcome and ditto what Rennie has said...... Use a schools bike to do your test......they have crash bars for when you drop it....whereas I'm guessing your Ninja doesn't..... Quote
Stilton Jo Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 How old are you?If you are 16/17, you cannot ride the Ninja....If you are 19+, you can do DAS on a 500, and that would enable you to ride your Ninja. If you are 24+ you can do DAS on a 600 and get an unrestricted licence enabling you to ride any cc bike. You will have to ride a bike from a training centre - you can't stick L plates on the Ninja, or ride it without an approved instructor with you. Guest Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Hi there. Sounds like you are all pretty clued-up on this. Thought I'd just jump in in case it helps confirm a few things from an Insurance background - When it comes to provisional licence holders, Insurance isn't so bad....the restrictions will just be on your age and the type of bike (as mentioned in a post above). If you're 16, all you can legally ride is a 50cc, no matter what licence you hold.If you're 17, you can ride up to a 125cc with whatever licence you hold. If you are over 17 and do the standard bike test, you can get Insured on (and legally ride) anything up to 33bhp for 2 years before you can move up to a bigger bike. We have a lot of clients who buy bikes that are 300 to 600cc and restrict them to 33bhp (this can be done at certain garages with a 'restrictor kit') so that when they have done the standard test they are fully insured. I agree that the best option is to use an instructor's bike whilst you are learning, as it is reasonably quick to get through the lessons and sort out a test etc. If you are old enough (ideally over 20)....I would strongly recommend doing what I did - My best recommendation if you don't want to be resticted in any way is to book a 3 or 4 days 'intensive course' with a riding instructor on a 500cc bike. It may seem daunting suddenly learning on a bigger bike, but i found that it actually feels safer to ride, as the wider rear-wheel and the heavier weight of the bike feels easier on the road than a 50cc or a 125cc etc. The intensive course may cost a bit, but it will get you ready for a bike test in a couple of days instead of a few months....and then you want to do the Direct Access Test. This will mean that you can ride whatever sized bike you like straight away....(although you want to be farily sensible....I wouldn't recommend going straight to an R1 or a CBR Fireblade). The Ninja 300 is a nice bike and will be perfect for riding for a while once you've done the test etc. The Direct Access will then mean though that if you decide to upgrade the bike in the near future you wont have to take 'another' test or wait another year or two before you have the option. I realise I've digressed a bt from the original question....but I hope this gives you some extra advice as well. In terms of insurance....it does mainly depend on your age really. If you have any questions or want any advice feel free to PM me and I'll endevour to help. Altenatively, if you'd like our specialist bikes team to give you a quote, PM me your contact details and I'll arrange a call-back for you. Many thanks,DanBikesure Quote
