Hi guys,

I’ve currently got this trailer for my track bike:

It’s a huge ex-caravan or something that looks like it’ll take a couple of bikes but it’s waaaay too big for my needs and a real sod to get in the garage and store as I have to put it in it’s side against the wall to get it out of the way.

I think it’s about time to chop it up a bit but I don’t really know where to start…

My options (I think) are:

1 - Take all the metal off the top, remove the A-frame part, chop the axle beam thing so it’s about 1m wide, cut down the A-frame to fit the new axle width and create a single channel for just the one bike.

The advantage of this is that it’ll be a lot smaller and lighter yet still maintain the balance point around the trailer axle.

The disadvantage is that it’s a shit load of work!

2 - Remove the top, cut off most of the sub frame rear of the axle and create a single channel.

+ This will be much less work and quicker to do.

- The width will be maintained and it will still be quite heavy. Also, the weight of the bike will sit much further forward so around 50% of the weight of the bike will be on the tow bar.

3 - Flog it on and get a new one.

+ Quick, easy and clean.

- Expensive!

If I adapt the trailer I have I can at least tidy it up a bit and customise it so the deck height is a couple of inches lower which will help taking the bike on and off. I’m pretty competent at welding stuff up and will probably arc it although on the first couple of trips I’ll be watching it like a hawk! Plus I can make up a wheel chock out of the scrap so I can do away with some of the strapping which will be a bonus. :-)

What do you lot think about this whole thing? I’ve been umming and ahhing for quite a while about this one as I’ve got it in the back of my mind that I’ll trade the bike up to something quicker at the end of the year so could really do with saving the pennies yet I don’t have much free time or much space to do the work in at the mo. :-s

Ive just done mine, it to was a caravan chassi but whoever cut it up cut it right behind the axel.

I cut the welds holding the axel on. Moved it forward and welded it back on.

Got rid of the hitch to because it weighed a ton.

There was quite a bit of work involved and i said i wish i just sold it and borght a bike trailer.

So what did you do for a hookup? Just a straight bar?

Mine has got the self braking bit on which is pretty heavy so I'd be glad to be rid of it.

The more I think about it, the more I can see it being a pain in the arse to do. ARGH!

Pretty much. Took the hitch off and welded some 50mmbox to the A frame.

It was a pain to do but now tows 100% better.
