Hi,

I´m not sure if this is the right place for this kind of question, so I´m sorry if isn't.

In September I´m moving to Luton for the University and since I love bikes and I already have my drivers licence (only for cars) from Portugal, does anyone know what will I have to do in order to take the A2 license? Because at first I was thinking on take the CBT but since I´m 19, is better to do the A2, right?

And I´m sorry if I have any mistakes but my English is far from perfect yet but I hope that I was able to explain myself properly.

In summary: -

The CBT must be taken in order to start riding. Think of it a compulsory bike tuition. After that you're entitled to ride for two years a 125 bike or smaller, so long as you have L plates and you cannot ride with a pillion (passenger) or on the motorways.

The A2 is the actual bike test. Which involves first having completed your CBT. As long as you are over 19 and you do the practical tests on a bigger bike, you'll be entitled to ride a bigger bike - 47bhp for the A2 I think.

There's a theory test in there as well to consider.

If you do intensive week course starting from nothing the CBT will be your first day. You need CBT certificate and a theory certificate to take your test.

Is your a Portugese licence? That might raise another question about do you have to change it for a UK one?

I know how to ride a bike so IT is not my problem...theory certificate might be haha

I don´t know, it´s a portuguese licence yes, but I called to IMTT(the organization responsible for all the licenses here) and they told me that I could drive a car without any problem, probably because of the E.U I guess but I don´t know if I have to "convert" to a English licence in order to take CBT, what do you think?

Hello mate and welcome. I'm about 10 minutes from Luton (unfortunately!), i can recommend Chiltern Motorcycles. Dave is a great instructor.

Good luck with the roads in Luton they are shocking when ever I go bck to see my family. And as above cbt, theory mod 1 and 2 needed. Then because of your age there is an engine size restriction not sure what though

CGD217 thanks for the tip,I will check that for sure...I know this is off-topic, but why do you say unfortunately? :o

theory mod 1 and 2 needed, I don´t know what this is...can someone explain me?

CBT is only for 125cc right?

Theory: multiple choice questions about the Highway Code

Mod 1: first part of the actual test. This is all the slow control, figure of 8, slalom, U turn etc

Mod 2: second part of the test. Ride out on the road with the examiner following you

You don't have to do mod 1 and 2 at the same time. There was a good month between mine

CBT allows you to ride a 125 with L plates. No motorway, no pillion

CBT is indeed for 125....but is also a rquirement for the other tests if you don't already have it. The current UK bike test comprises of 3 elements (additional to the CBT)....theory test, Module 1 test and Module 2 test. Module 1 (Mod1) is an off road manouverability test which has exercises like: swerve test, u-turn test and a figure 8 test. Once this has been completed successfully you then do the Module 2 test (Mod2), which is an on-road riding test which is monitored by an examiner either on another bike or occassionally in a car.

Hope this answers your question.

Unfortunately = British humour....

But I can do all the 3 elements in one day if I wish to do so, right?

I´m still trying to get the unfortunately ahah is he complaining about living near Luton or he like it? ahah

No....it wouldn't be possible to do all 3 elements in one day I don't think. You can't apply to do your DAS until you have done the Theory test. And I don't think it would be possible to do Mod1 and Mod2 in one day.

You'd have to ask CDG about how he feels about Luton...

I did mod1 & 2 on the same day ;-) ....... But only by chance as they had a cancellation in the afternoon so it wasn't booked until after I'd passed mod 1.

So my portuguese licence does not help me in anything right? I still have to do theoretical test?

I have to think about it, because here in Portugal I can take the A2 licence with my age, I just don´t know if I have the time for it...anyway, thank you for your help!

Like many here, I had a UK car licence for 20 years before I started biking properly. I had to do CBT, theory test, Module 1 and finally Module 2 in order to get my bike licence. At 19 years old you can do CBT and then ride a 125 unaccompanied for up to 2 years but you must display L plates and not carry pillion or ride on Motorway. If you decide to do the A2 you will learn on a larger bike but you will not be able to ride unaccompanied, you will have to be under instruction from an approved driving instructor at any time you are on the road. You can't book your Mod 2 until such times as you have passed your theory test and got your CBT certificate. It takes a full day to do your CBT and then a few lessons will be needed to learn how to negotiate the Mod 1 test properly. Once you have passed Mod 1 you can apply for your Mod 2 test. All in all I would budget for a couple of weeks to get through all the stages.

Just to be sure I'm understanding right:

First I need to do the theory test, then the module 1, once i got this module complete I can make module 2, all of this in about 2 weeks?

And if I want to take the A2 I can start taking it right after i completed the CBT and it's just riding a bike with more cc, is that correct?

First steps you need to do are CBT and a theory test.

You can do these in either order.

The theory test you have to do at specific test centres which aren't where the actual tests are held. I held a car driving licence for 13 years before I did my bike test, I had to do a theory test for my car licence but still had to do another one for the bike test. There are bike specific questions on it so make sure you book the right one!

CBT you do with a school, usually takes a day.

You need a theory test certificate and a CBT certificate to show to the examiners to take mod 1.

You need all three to take mod 2.

You can get mod 1 and 2 on the same day if you book carefully but you have to pay for both and if you fail mod 1 in the morning you can't take your mod 2 in the afternoon and lose the money. Quite a few schools offer intensive courses that take a week. On the Monday you do your CBT and then they'll book mod 1 and mod 2 for you for the Friday. If you do these then obviously make sure you've sorted the theory test first. I did a lesson a week with the school I went to. We booked mod 1 when I was ready and when I passed that we booked mod 2, I think there was about a month between them in the end.

There are three "levels" of licence you can get now:

A1 means you take the mod 1 and mod 2 tests on a 125 bike. You can take this test at 17. If you pass you can ride a 125.

A2 means you take the mod 1 and 2 tests on a 400cc bike. You can take this test at 19. If you pass you can ride a bike up to 47bhp. You can restrict bigger bikes down to this but not if it started with more than 94bhp

A means you take the tests on a 600cc bike. You take this test at 24 or 2 years after passing A2, whichever happens sooner. When you pass this you can ride any size/power bike you like.
