Harri Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Hi guys, a fuel tank with a rusting bottom seam! How simple is a repair? or would it be time to source another tank?cheers Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 what tank is it how bad is the leak and have you checked how far up the side of the tank the rust goes, its often easier and nearly always cheaper to get 2nd hand tank Quote
Harri Posted November 8, 2014 Author Posted November 8, 2014 Hi, a bike was advertised for sale but the bottom seam on the tank was rusted. To what extent I can't tell from the photos. But I do know from searching the tank model is almost impossible to find. I've found a couple on Japan Ebay!!! I'm giving up on it. Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 wasnt a kawasaki zepher by any chance was it Quote
Tango Posted November 8, 2014 Posted November 8, 2014 No....it was a Tammy SRX Steve.....hence the scarcity of a replacement tank..... Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 gautrex is the man to ask about tank repairs if i remember correctly he has just had or having one done that was really bad but talking huge amounts of money as its not just a case of welding seam back in it normally have to remove section of tank make up new section weld it in can see y folk run a mile from doing them Quote
Harri Posted November 9, 2014 Author Posted November 9, 2014 Hi all, yes, the Yamaha looked a good bike except for the rusty tank. After looking into it I decided not to pursue it. Shame! Quote
klingelton Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 as far as I know (which isn't much) before attempting a repair on a tank, you would need to empty it of fuel, wash it twice and make sure all fuel vapours are gone before considering putting a welder near it.After you've farted around doing this, probably easier with a 2nd hand tank.
