Anybody had a staircase replaced? Is it much grief? Planning a big refurb of the up and downstairs hallway. This will include replacement of all doorframes, the staircase and a replastering of the whole area.

A rough cost for the new stair case, so far is around £700 not including labour. Anyone know how much you're likely to get charged for a carpenter to replace a staircase?

How long is a piece of string.

I guess it depends on exactly what you want.. a simple replacement. like for like. or a different design. I have been told in the past that this is one of the biggest jobs you can have done inside a house. big = expensive. and massive disruption. I believe that the entire staircase needs to be removed first.. so.. you're looking at internal scaffolding and so on. get quotes - lots of them.

Sounds good. Not looking for extravagance, a straight swap with nice new fixtures really.

Do you think plastering first, then staircase or the otherway round?

I'm just guessing now.. but it seems likely to me that in the process of removal the wall will need to be stripped back to the brickwork. depends how the stairs are attached. but that seems about right to me.

Stairs first then plaster.

Not a massive job.

Smash old stairs out.

Fit new stairs.

Its as easy as that.

Get a day rate, 2 guys should remove and fit within a day.

There only plugged to the wall. Comes of with a bar.

are you saying that building methods have never changed?

Because this is not what I was told when a builder friend of the family came with me to view a house.. the stairs had dry rot. huge job he said.. whole thing had to come out as well as an internal wall and middle landing. but then.. this was a victorian villa not a modern thrown together wimpy job.

walk away. so I did. he was first in line to do the job too and knew I could afford it. but told me to forget it.

might be as easy as you say.. but could just as easily be a cash hungry nightmare. I'd rather assume a cash hungry nightmare until I get the quotes in and know for certain that it wont be.

Builder by trade and In my experience if it's the same design and same place and a normal flight of about 13 steps or there about and tou already have the stairs made then one day two people .. If the wall is made out of timber I'd say another day for that. It will get messy as they didn't use plasterboards back then.

You have then got to take into account the flooring If it will match up to the new stairs and wall. So may need re carpeting.

Carpenters will charge around 150 a day plus labourer.. but the people you get your stairs from will fit this no?? Or is it a Internet site

Tbh, the stairs themselves just thought it was a case of straight swap then add the bits and bobs to it.
