Engine rattle on CBR600f

Hello folks

Looking fo a wee bit of help here.

Got a rattle coming from the right hand side of my engine.

Sounds like the CCT. However i had this rattle last year and replaced the CCT with a brand new 1. The noise was gone. Now ive just been out on the bike today for a while and its back again.

Surely the CCT isn't gone already?

Could it possibly be needing a cam chain?

The bike is a 92' CBR600f

Did you fit a auto or manual cct?

Just an auto 1 i think it was.

The thing is you have swapped a auto one at the end of its adjustment for the same thing.

Manual ones have more adjustment.

Easy to fit to.

could well be the CCT again

its hard to say without hearing it and inspecting it too

are they known for going and is there an updated one for it?

There's the ape manual one.

Not sure about a auto one.

I know someone with a vfr. His cct's was at the end of there adjustment, he had oem autos fitted.

Surely if you replace something with the same range of adjustment you haven't done anything?

Manual one should sort it, but first try removing yours, give it a good clean and make sure there's oil pressure getting to it.

Ive saw the ape manual ones but heard they are murder to get adjusted correctly.

Ill take mine out and inspect it and give it a clean up 1st to see how it goes.

a lot of the older ones had weak springs that caused the CCT to not adjust properly

newer updated ones had a stronger spring and a better design so they would adjust

I tested one by removing it, pushing a screwdriver into the hole against the tensioner blade. I started the engine and oil spewed out of the tiny hole. As I pushed on the screwdriver , the noise got quieter. I stripped and cleaned the tensioner, made sure the oil way was clear, refilled it with clean oil, rebuilt it and refitted it. Been good ever since.

As i say the noise seemed to have gone away for the past year now its just came back again so CCT was only bought and replaced at the start of last year so pretty sure that would be updated if the bike is a 92 plate.

Heard CBR600's of old were famous for bad CCT.

Had 3 CBR600F's and all had this issue!

2 of them started rattling at 8000-10000 miles and then every time I replaced them they would only last a year or so, or another 10k miles before the rattle started again.

People long assumed it was a CCT getting to the end of its adjustment and rattling, but this isn't the case.

Essentially, the tensioner is breaking down and it stops doing its job across certain parts of the rev range, and as it wears further, it gets worse and allows the chain to thrash.

A manual one is good, but it has a few drawbacks.

On hot days where the engine is hotter in general it can rattle a bit, and it needs tightening every now and again, and as it's very hard to reach, it's a bit of a faff each time.

Just buy a new one, and keep up with oil services etc, for some reason mine lasted longer with regular services... Or it could have been I was riding it a bit more casually at that time.

Try this at your own risk but ive done it and others have too.

With the engine off, loosen off the 2 bolts holding the tensioner on the bike, do them evenly and slowly until the rachet pops out 1 click<---very important that its one click only. So go slow and listen carefully. Then just tighten everything up and away you go.

Im pretty sure there and videos on youtube of people doing this too.
