I picked my youngest boy up from nursery yesterday afternoon, and noticed a woman arrive to collect her son in a car with a completely flat front tyre. She had no idea how to change it, and was planning on driving the four miles back to her house on it. I said I'd change it for her, and set about extracting the spare. That was also as flat as a pancake, so my wife was despatched to fetch our inflator from home. Twenty minutes later and she was on her way.

Seriously, I'm still astounded by the stupidity of some people, and the fact there still seem to be plenty of folk out there with no idea how to do something as simple as change a wheel.

Is there not some country's in the EU that changing a wheel is part of the driving test?

tbh.. never HAD to change one myself, i imagine i could do it if needed to. But i'm not thick enough to drive around with a flat tyre.

Not having the nous to change a wheel is one thing, but not even having the basic gumption to ask someone to help, or to phone a recovery company or a local garage and instead to plan on driving four miles in an un-steerable car with your child in the back is a completely different level of idiocy.

And to think this person is allowed to vote in the general election next week...

WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?!

I though basic maintenance was part of the driving test nowadays or am I just making that up?

Anyway, you seem to be forgetting dearest Mark that "people" are inherently stupid.

wouldn't that potentially void the insurance aswell?

I see so many people driving around with tyres that need AIR!!!

It does my head in that simple maintenance isn't done.

She was about my age, so she probably took her test well over 20 years ago.

I think I read a signature line on this forum or another that said "Consider how dumb the average person is, and then consider that half the population is dumber than that."

Painfully true...

I live by a school and parents driving with flats and other issues is hilariously common. There was one woman who had clearly gone in to the back of someone hard and spent almost a month driving to pick up her precious with a squished front end, smashed light clusters and her front bumper secured in place with pink string.

Back before we were on British Summer Time this year, I saw a cretin driving through Southampton with no headlights on. When he stopped at the lights, I (pedestrian) walked up to his car and knocked on the window, he wound it down and said (in a foreign accent), "Yes boss?" I said, "You've forgotten to turn on your headlights". He said, "Is what please?" I said, "You need to turn on your h-e-a-d-l-i-g-h-t-s!" (while pointing at his headlights) He just nodded, smiled, and said, "Yes boss, happy evening you as well!" And off he went. Without his lights on.

Good on you for sorting the problem out  . The sad thing is that if something had happened to the car on her way home they would try to find you liable for it. It's a crazy world we live in.

I saw a bloke driving up the main street with 3 flats, 2 of which had disintegrated (seemingly oblivious).

I also offered to help a lady in a car park whom had a flat, but the AA were going to arrive any minute (good luck with that!).

I changed my mates tyre because he didn't know how. self proclaimed petrol head who can't change a tyre.

The wife waits until something is destroyed before telling me about it and having me do something!

It really doesn't surprise me that people can't do basic maintenance on their cars. Most of them can hardly drive them!
