Guest Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Not really something that needs fixing since there's no problem but wouldn't mind an explaination from superior knowledge on this... Done 4 oil changes on the R1 and never had to top up. The last change was done at 18k and that's 4k miles ago now... using some german fully synth stuff. Fairly cheap as far as fully synths go (£30 on the bay for 4L)... Anyway, towards the end of my trip in Snowdonia, my oil light would intermittently come on. No big deal - turns out I needed a top up... so topped up with 350ml.Here's the thing... it's not leaking anywhere and there's no problem - it runs perfectly, as it always has. So how come I needed a top up (which I've never had to do before) - is it likely to be just cheap shite that doesn't hold it's temp very well??I'll go back to silkolene part synth on the next change and just stick with that I think... Stu Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 the heat could be causing it to go too thin and get past the rings and been burnt off! is fully synth specified in the book? using a slightly thicker grade in the summer can stop it too and perfectly acceptable to do Quote
Guest Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I don't know what's specified in the book... It's just a high performing engine and I do thrash it a bit, and it runs very hot... so opted for fully synth on the last change. Quote
fq-craigus Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 The more i used to thrash my old bike the more i had to top up, nothing to worry about its just par for the course. All depends on riding style as to how much it uses. Cheap rubbish oil would just nacker your engine so if your wngine is ok then i wouldnt worry. As above the temp may also have a bearing Quote
Guest Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Cool. I think I'll go with Silkolene next time anyway. Only one I haven't really had any issues with at all. Quote
Stu Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I must say that 350ml is not a lot in 4k! I have known bikes to use a litre every 1k Quote
Guest Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 I must say that 350ml is not a lot in 4k! I have known bikes to use a litre every 1k It will be a little more thinking about it. I accidently set it to just shy of maximum and the top up brought me to half way. So probably burned off about 5-600ml or so. Probably isn't a lot, but when I don't usually burn a drop it's a bit much... Quote
Joeman Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 Mine drinks about that much between oil changes too. Reason I know is that I topped it up the day of its annual service so I didn't look like a bad owner Quote
