Phooey Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 I have just finished spraying up my fork legs with Hammerite Smooth and after several applications and rubbing back have managed to achieve a reasonably good finish. I was planning on laying a couple of coats of clear lacquer ontop now then baking it all off to a really hard finish. But, I have just read on a car forum that laying a lacquer onto Hammerite will mess up the finish and the guy was advised to leave the lacquer off. What are your thoughts people? Will the lacquer mess up the Hammerite finish? (It is sprayed, by the way, not painted.) Quote
Guest Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 Will the lacquer mess up the Hammerite finish? (It is sprayed, by the way, not painted.) yes it probably will. its a common 'fix' in BMW land to repair damage to the silver paintwork using 'smoothrite' silver - which is a very close match in colour. This was posted by one fella who thought coating it was a bright idea. BEWARE! I redid my top-box-to-R1100GS rack adaptor in gloss Smoothrite. Looked great! Then I coated it with Rustoleum clear varnish...The result was that the Smoothrite instantly crinkled and I was left with a crackle-style finish. So I considered starting again...but instead I let the crackled paint dry properly and it looks very attractive and seems perfectly sturdy! But the point is - always test the varnish you are going to use on Smoothrite (or any paint) first.I also find Smoothrite does not like even a sniff of fuel near it. Mr Fro Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 Hammerite takes an age to cure fully so doesn't lend itself to lacquer. Plus you'd have to be careful about getting the correct lacquer to avoid dodgy interaction which could cause crazing/wrinkling.Why would you want to lacquer it anyway? Quote
Phooey Posted May 24, 2015 Author Posted May 24, 2015 Mr Fro: Thinking the lacquer would toughen it a bit. I have baked it in the oven now. Not wanting to test to see how tough it is. Quote
