Guest Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 Hi,I'm looking for some help regarding the pencil ignition coils on my Z750S.Having removed the coil yesterday, due to running on 3 cylinders, I found the coil outer plastic sheath has cracked down the full length and fallen off of the coil. The metal body of the coil is rusty due to water ingress.I swapped the coil with another on the bike, just to prove the faulty coil, and noticed that the other coil also had water ingress marks and a slight crack in the plastic body.I have one coil on it's way from a breaker, but my questions are:-What should I do about the water ingress, would a smearing of silicon around the top of the coil hurt? What should I do about the crack in the other coil? Is it worth some remedial repair ?Is this a known problem with all bikes, or just a 10 year old bike showing it's age? Thanks in advance.Jason Quote
Mr Fro Posted June 8, 2015 Posted June 8, 2015 From working on the OH's Lotus that also uses the IC sticks...Cracked coil sticks can cause a misfire as it's an easier path for the spark to earth to the block rather than via the plug. The (slightly bodgy) solution is to wrap the stick in insulating tape. If you're worried about ingress via the top of the stick then you can smear some electric/vacuum grease around the mating surfaces. Quote
