Rust

Hi all,

I have an issue with one of my wing mirrors.

It seems to have tiny black holes, which I assume is rust. My scooter is a kymco like 125cc, 1.5 years old, parked in underground covered car park but often left out in elements while i'm at work.

Seems to be really bizarre to have this issue so early on, has anyone had this problem, it was bought new but i'm wary it may just be because it's left out in all weather for 8hrs each day.

And perhaps more importantly how do I go about infilling the rust?

oxide rust remover?

infilling?

file down?

new wing mirror(s)?

:/

THANKS in advance :)

Rust on a Kymco?

You can sand as much of the rust off as possible and brush on some rust remedy (or similar). Next is filling, sanding down, priming and painting - hammerite is good at slowing rust. Another option is to cut the offending rust out and weld in a new bit of metal.

All of that is a fair bit of effort - I'd be tempted to get a new set of mirrors - probably cost the same as doing the above anyway. :-)

Gah... you beat me to it..

My advice would be to cut off the rusting part.. then a bit more.. and a bit more.. untill the bike is in pieces. Now sweep it under the rug and get a reliable bike.

I'm rather impressed that the mirror is the only rusty part after a year and a half. Does the bike have fairings? Might be worth checking underneath them

With regards to the mirror, rag and WD40 is the way to go, the finish on Chinese bike components is pretty delicate and it's easy to do more harm than good if you use anything too abrasive. After you've cleaned it up, start a habit of treating the bike with ACF50 or similar - wouldn't normally urge it at this time of year, but if you're an all-weather commuter it'd be worth it.

Oh, and inb4 "but Kymco are Taiwanese"
