Exhaust primer?

Going to be taking off the downpipes sometime over the next week or two and giving them a bit of TLC.

They aren't too bad but as you can imagine, they have a bit of rust on them. I will brush them off with a wire brust and rub them down to get rid of as much of the red stuff as I can but I realise that not all of the rust will be gone. I wont to give them a primer coat before I paint with VHT matt black paint. What would you guys suggest as a good product to help keep the rust at bay that will also cope with the high temperatures of the exhaust system?

What are the chances of this holding the rust back for at least the next couple of years?

I wouldn't have even thought of priming it personally, I'm not saying its a bad idea, but in my (limited) experience with VHT paint, I've always gone straight to metal.

I've only ever heard of people spraying the pipes directly with vht paint. By the way aldi have "stove paint" at the moment same thing high temp paint up to 650 degrees £4.99 a can.

Wow! That's a good price.

I decided to paint straight onto the pipes in the end. I treated with Kurust then sprayed straight onto the pipes. Looks good

I have tried both treating the rust first, or painting with high temp paint and it made no difference. I used Halfords Very High Temp paint.
