MOT fail then pass!

Recommended Posts

Posted

Took my bike to a garage today for a service then a MOT. Reason for service is to put any issues right and that it passes its MOT.

Got 2 MOT sheets. First one was a FAIL, next one was a pass!

One of the main reasons I have the service was so it didn't fail the MOT and pass "first go".

Now I can check my MOT history online which includes a fail

Do they legally have to do this?

not legally but why do through the bike to make sure its ok to only go through it all again for an MOT?

they MOT it then rectify any parts and retest it

they only have to retest what it failed on and not a full MOT

once they start an MOT they cant rectify anything to make it pass either

This happens all the time with my car. Basically if they find anything that is a fail during the MOT then they have to record it. Nothing stopping them then going on to correct it then pass it. This has happened on my car due to headlight beam pattern, blown bulb, drivers seat unable to be adjusted.

Seems stupid, but so are many things.

if it wasnt included in the service then yes they can

Forgot to mention that I said "basic service, but if there are any other issues, then fix them, and then MOT please".

I could've just taken it there and asked them to find any faults and fix them, then taken it back the next day for the MOT...

This seems to be standard practice at a lot of garages now.

The MOT is computerised, they are supposed to do it step by step as the prompts on screen tell them.

Most will start he MOT go to the vehicle and do the tests, return to the Computer and enter the results.

Once they have logged as an item as a fail, it stays on record,

The test is also timed there is a minimum time they can spend doing it.

What did it fail on? Was it something that should have been checked/fixed on the service?

I don't think having a fail show on the MOT is anything to worry about. The failure rate is pretty high anyway.

Not many vehicles have a clean all pass MOT history. Bulbs and Tyres are the main reasons.

they have a set time for the MOT they can't take too long or too short otherwise VOSA will pay a visit!

they also visit if the failure rate is very high a mate of mine is mot tester and he was fairly strict on fork seals,he got a visit from vosa about it who said that a smear should pass with advisory oil running down the leg is a fail so thats what he does now

VOSA can be a bit keen on some places and a bit lax on others!

my bike MOT guy got busted a few times but it was always for stupid stuff like going under time! he never used to get a visit and he would pass your bike if he could hear you coming

My mate has a garage the specialises in vans and light trucks he is straight as a die but is always having visits!

I think its due to the nature of the vehicles he is testing to be honest!

If the bikes due for a service fair enough, but there's no point in paying out if it's not needed. A basic service depending on the mechanic he will just drop the oil and a quick scoot round. I would just submit the bike for the test if it passes all good if not I've got so many days to get it fix and get a retest.
