corrosion on heel plates

I've called them heel plates, the panels on the side of the bike that both sets of pegs are fixed to. There were already marks from constant contact with my boot heels, and although the panels appear to be solid metal - I thought alloy like the wheels - the surface coat has come off where its been rubbed by my boot and along the top of the piece they are both corroding and the top coat of whatever, paint?, is all bubbling up. Its a 2008 BMW by the way.

Does anyone know what these pieces are made of, and what the best plan is for treating the corrosion.

I expect them to be made of ally but could be wrong.

Is there orange rust, or pale pitting? Easiest way to tell.

I use a brass wire cup polisher to smooth the surface and then use a couple of coats of hammerite stone chip. Always provides a good smooth finish and lasts a while, the good thing is you just top up every time your boots wear through.
