Applying throttle = revs DROP (!?)

Recommended Posts

Last 2-3 weeks EVERY night I ride home from work:

- Bike is good for first mile

- Next 2-4 miles when I stop, if I apply throttle the bike nearly completely dies

- After 3-4 miles the bike is back to normal

Wtf?

Quite a range of possibilities, had a similar problem myself recently.

Keep the checks basic before worrying about bigger problems, I'd check:

1: Battery voltage/connectors...I say this as the battery may not be charging properly or delivering the correct output.

2: HT lead, may be malfunctioning or on its way out (replaced this recently on my bike that often cut out when applying throttle, solved all my issues)

3: Blockages/dirt in air filter that can affect the fuel/air ratio in the engine.

4: Dodgy spark plug, inspect it, clean it....their cheap enough so even preplace it.

5: Dodgy ground wire, inspect for loose/corroded connections, give things a bit of a wiggle when the bikes running, see if anything causes a change in rhythm (a loose/worn spark plug cap gave me some grief for a wile)

Beyond that things go a little deeper and is beyond me to advise, one of the more experienced chaps will help here I'm sure.

I would suggest something is damp when you set off and is 'cured' when it has dried out (3-4 miles).

Give the electronic components a spray of WD40 and see if that helps.

No fault codes, the bikes currently plugged into my computer as we speak. It seems to be at the point the bike goes from choke to no choke, even though it's FI... If you get me?

Do these value look suspect?

TPS gets reset (twice) every time I adjust the fueling or idle.

Any idea last time they were done, and maybe try the idle fuel trim

Absolutely no idea, got no history with this bike

am I right in thinking you have put another map on the bike via tuneECU?

if so stick the stock one back on and see if the symptoms improve

also out of balance throttle bodies can do the same although its usually all the time not intermittent

I'm starting to feel some vibrations on the footpegs now too so this is why my next step is throttle balancing. Hopefully that'll also cure this issue.

Hi ,just a bit more info along the same lines

http://www.triumphrat.net/ecm-and-fi-tuning-help-tips-and-tricks/165897-tuneecu-tps-and-isc-stepper-adjustment.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

That looks a little too complicated for me, I dunno how much I trust myself to start messing with steppers etc. :(

Dont blame ya Liam, its easy to sit here and say what should be done, doing it is another thing altogether , I dabble with injection but I'm a carb man through and through, thats why I bugger about with the old stuff :D :thumb:

What is it with throttle body balancing? No garage around here does it and a few haven't even heard of it (!?).

"we only balance carbs mate"

Sounds like you dodged a bullet there Liam, cant be much of a bike shop, its still only a matter of taking off the vacuum pipes and balancing , I always use a Morgan , I think on your bike everything is balanced from number 1 cylinder, and then 3&4 and then 1&2 to 3&4 , have a look at that Joe Blogs ,I think its on there, of course you will have to go thro the TPS set up afterwards

Yea fortunately I didn't use them [emoji39] I can do all the TPS and idle adjustments myself on TuneECU.. I might have found a lad on the North East Bikers Facebook that has a shop that will do it [emoji4]

Not a very good place if they only do carbs!! Especially since everything is going injection

Balancing throttle bodies is no different to carbs!

Hi Liam , yeh take a look at page 8-84 of your manual states you can use mercury equipment, but helps if you got it, hate to say it but i never trust bike shops for repair :)

Don't have the equipment or the balls to do it pal, it seems to consist of too much dismantling. I sympathise with the lack of trust and that's why I done all the other servicing bits myself, plus I'm a cheap-skate so prefer to save money [emoji39]
