Engine cuts when try to engage a gear

So my bike starts fine, I lift the kick stand up, put into first and then engine cuts.

Not much information to go on I know but any ideas?

Sounds like the kick stand switch is faulty......

As above, take it out and throw it in the bin

Ok thanks, is that a big/expensive job. Had quick look on Ebay could couldn't see any in the UK.

get it on a paddock stand if you can and have a look

Just had a look definitely sticking. Managed to pulled it about another 0.5cm with a screwdriver. It went in to gear no problem. So I plan to take off tomorrow give it a good clean and lube to hopefully free it up, unless its it just knackered?

Would give it a go now but it's bloody dark out there

Found a few on switches on eBay for around a tenner, used of course. Seem easy enough if i can find where the cable connectors plug in.

You can usually clean them up then they are fine

Took it off, opened it up and the spring was dry as a bone. Lubed it up good and it's working better although doesn't fully extend as I would like it to, BUT the bike does engage gear now which was the problem. So for now its working, I guess only time will tell how long for.

if it plays up in the future you could always bypass it as with things like that buying a 2nd hand one it could be just as bad

That's true regarding second hand stuff. I thought about bypassing it but as it's a safety feature I would probably rather keep it.
