Suzuki GS 500 E Carb issues

Hi all, I recently stripped both carbs as the bike would not idle and as suspected one jet was blocked and the other partially blocked.Since then it ticks over  a treat but when I go for a little ride it smells of petrol and sometimes it leaks petrol from the air box drain which is the larger pipe with the slit valve in the end. I am thinking its a stuck float issue but I dont fancy stripping them both down again. I usually tap the carb bowl with a small hammer and it stops but I would welcome any thoughts on the subject. Many thanks

Does sound like a float issue. Could be something sticking or a bit of debris. Some carbs it's also possible to fit the float in the wrong orientation.

If the float has a slight leak fuel can get inside and cause the float to sink too. You can tell by shaking it if this is the case.
