Suzuki GS 500 E Carb issues

Hi all, I recently stripped both carbs as the bike would not idle and as suspected one jet was blocked and the other partially blocked.Since then it ticks over  a treat but when I go for a little ride it smells of petrol and sometimes it leaks petrol from the air box drain which is the larger pipe with the slit valve in the end. I am thinking its a stuck float issue but I dont fancy stripping them both down again. I usually tap the carb bowl with a small hammer and it stops but I would welcome any thoughts on the subject. My first thoughts where stuck floats or the needles not seating properly. 
 

unfortunately the only real fix is strip down and re clean and make sure everything is immaculate when rebuilding

Does sound like a float issue. Could be something sticking or a bit of debris. Some carbs it's also possible to fit the float in the wrong orientation.

If the float has a slight leak fuel can get inside and cause the float to sink too. You can tell by shaking it if this is the case.

thanks very much for input ,the floats seemed ok and free of fuel on stripdown and I tend to think its a needle seating issue.
