Canam Ryker handlebar mounted brake query.

Hi all, long time no see, I have a valid reason, I fell over outside my house at the end of June last year and badly damaged the remainder of my right leg, the flesh, nerve and tendon/ligaments took a beating and I have less movement than I had previous, following this, my doctor and the DVLA have decided I can no longer ride a two wheel bike, but my doctor suggested I look at a Can-am or the 3 wheel scooters by the likes of Peugeot, Piaggio etc.  I tried a Piaggio MP3, but I cannot get my prosthetic leg in a position for me to ride comfortably.

Last week I went to see a Ryker, I found it comfortable, but because of the only brake being on the right footrest, this leaves me at a disadvantage as I cannot operate the brake with feeling, pressure and confidence. I've asked a few specialists if it's possible to fit a handlebar mounted lever to work like a dual linked system that some bikes have, but none could make anything that they would feel safe installing for me, so I thought I was stuck. Until I was pointed towards a company in America called ISCI, the trouble is, these are almost £2000 supplied and installed in the UK and is very very restrictive financially for me.

Does anyone know of an alternative or are there any members with an engineering background who can make me something, even if it entails removing the foot lever to aid installation?

Afternoon all, I've spoken to several aftermarket manufacturers, but only one can supply me with a unit that is compatible and the price to include installation is going to be as I've already mentioned, almost £2,000.  Hel make a thumb operated one, but it's not got enough power to lock up the rear wheel, so will not be a safe alternative.  

 

Rekluse do not make anything for the Can-am, but it's something they may look into.

 

I've been to the dealers again this morning and tried the trike and even with the brake pedal lifted into the highest operating position, is still not in a place to allow me to use it in a safe manner, so I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place and now looking for alternatives, so if anyone can point me in the direction of a company or someone with a good engineering background, please let me know.

 

Back to the drawing board.

Do you need to lock the rear? Most of your useful braking is at the front anyway.

 

As to a place to mod, how about somewhere that builds custom bikes? They might be able to engineer something or fit a linked braking system?

As Above, why would you need to lock up the rear brake!!!!

The Hel unit is a thumb operated hydraulic unit, so is the same as a rear brake hydraulic unit, and the more you push it the more the brake works!

 

I change the electronics on my mates XVS1100 trike to a push button gearbox, and another mate has just converted his Harley trike to electronics, after losing his left foot in bike accident, and in fact he still rides solo's as well, currently a Triumph 1700 storm no less.

And he would probably do the work for you, as he builds trikes now.

But we live in Dorset.

Okay, so just looked at ISCI site, never realised that CAN-AM's have no front brake lever, all the braking is done on a Linked system on 1 rear brake lever, operated by your r/h foot!!

 

So they offer a complete package that includes master cylinder and a slave to maximum, the fact that your hand has to do all 3 brakes!!!! And it also leaves in the foot brake just in case you need it!!!!

 

I was thinking you were just replacing the rear brake pedal, not the complete system!!

Could you ride a Yamaha Nikken?

 

I could, but not legally, I never past a test.😪

 

I was informed by the DVLA that I must have enough power in my hands or legs to be able to lock the wheels.

 

I've sent an email to Trike Shop to ask what they can offer, thank you for the suggestion.
