Egon247 Posted December 4, 2024 Author Posted December 4, 2024 Well. That's a thing. I ordered some gasket rings for the rear pipes from the centre box. Only the whole rear pipe fell off when I undid the mounting bolt. Meh. I think the 34 year old oem exhaust might have to go ... 2 1 Quote
Simon Davey Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Meh indeed, who needs exhausts though..... 1 Quote
Egon247 Posted December 4, 2024 Author Posted December 4, 2024 Wonder if I'd get away with welding up the hole and just having a 4:1. Lol. Quote

bud Posted December 4, 2024 Posted December 4, 2024 Disappointing we have no video without the exhaust attached. Quote
Egon247 Posted December 5, 2024 Author Posted December 5, 2024 Got to remind myself that it's not a race and Its going to take more time than I imagine. I stripped the chain to see what was what with the kinky chain. Seems whoever put it on forgot the lube and the inner roller was seized onto the link. And my cheapy chain link tool is shite. Utter shite. Won't be buying cheap again, have ordered the £40 one this time. The exhaust has put me in a quandary too. If I buy a 4:1 am I going to have to rejet all the bloody carbs that I just jetted? Need to walk away and not play with it for a bit I think. 2 Quote
RideWithStyles Posted December 5, 2024 Posted December 5, 2024 The inner link (left of pic) is abit bent (wonder if it’s been prized at or a stone trapped between?) or was that you? they may have actually greased it but it’s been washed away due to the seal fail? Quote

No, they're parallel, possibly my awesome photography skills. 2 Quote
Nick the wanderer Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Re having to change the jets with a different pipe, that may be so, but since you haven't ridden it with the current setup, you don't really know how it's going to go. I'd stay positive with the carbs for now. How is finding a new pipe going? I take it there's nothing to weld to on the old one. Quote

I've taken a punt on one from eBay, cheap as chips as it was a bit grotty. If that doesn't pan out I'll get something made up out of the two. It's a gamble but hey, if it pans out then it's all good. If not, I'll load up the A-team music and see what I can fudge together. 3 1 Quote

Egon247 Posted December 8, 2024 Author Posted December 8, 2024 My boss is going to freak out this week. I'm having the exhaust delivered to work... LOL Might have to lose the centre stand though, only just thought of that. 2 Quote

Egon247 Posted December 12, 2024 Author Posted December 12, 2024 Well. Good news/bad news day today. Bad news first. It didn't fit. Too short and the header clamps didn't fit. Very probably off a 600. Ah well. Lost the coolant drain bolt too. But that's only an m6 with a copper washer on it, so no biggie. The bolt holding the original on had a 14mm square nut on it and that was rusted solid. Cut that off. Snapped an exhaust stud too. So that's gonna be a thing of joy. As you can imagine, after snapping that and then finding it didn't fit, I was in a special mood. Good news time. Then I noticed that the magnetic tool tray didn't stick to the collection box. Odd. Seems someone fitted a stainless set of downpipes/collector so after drilling out the mild steel bolt on the clamp (why????) it looks like I can get away with just buying two mufflers/cans. Not quite the result I expected but hey, it's a win. Just that stud to sort and I'll bung it all back on again with some new hardware. Christmas is eating all my spare change at the moment so it might be a while. Onwards. 4 Quote
Egon247 Posted December 15, 2024 Author Posted December 15, 2024 (edited) Broken studs. Tried the mole grips. Just chewed it. Dug out the ol' stick welder. Tried 6 times to weld a nut on the stub. Each time it just "capped the nut off" with no penetration into the stud. I'm no welder (sparkies shouldnt create arcs like that, usually means there's something very wrong!) and I imagine my sticks are damp and or old. I ave a "gasless mig" which I have never used as it was a present. Might try that. Losing the faith today. Safety beer time. Edited December 15, 2024 by Egon247 1 Quote

Fiddlesticks Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 (edited) Probably I'm misunderstanding but... Are we looking at the threaded bar half way up on the left? Is it threaded to the end? Any chance of threading two nuts onto it, one to lock against the other (turn two spanners against each other). Then unscrew using the first nut. There's a little stub opposite the one on the left that you're referring to. 1 Quote
RideWithStyles Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 (edited) This is one, as with the collar. Yes SD is correct Fliddles, you ain’t getting them out like that. Plus youd need abit of stud to grip to. best way is to use time (a lot), penetrating oil (a lot), gas heat (a lot), shock treatment with a socket jack hammer (some) or a hammer with a socket that has contact with the bolt and case at the same time which hit the socket and the shock is sent to the bolt (but not directly hit the stud with the hammer to bend/snap it) and to the case which helps the thread. if you have a welder you could weld a nut to what is left of the thread as low down as possible to give some leverage and strength. the right one is pretty much near the drill and retap job at this point but id still try the way at the top first as it may surprise you. Egon247 Posted December 16, 2024 Author Posted December 16, 2024 Heh. Sorry, my amazing photography skills again. So, the stud in red used to look like the blue one. Tried to get nuts onto it but the m7x1 oem nuts are too big and I don't have any full nuts in that thread. The two nut ideas is sound. If you can get them on What doesn't help is theyre M8 into the engine but m7 onto the exhaust. The stepped size change is the point of failure. I've heated it with my blow torch, and attempted to weld an m8 nut onto it but my rods are past their best I think. I'm no pro. And my welding sucks at best. Bearing in mind too, both my welders came from the middle aisle at lidl. Lol. I'll try again today with the "gasless mig" and see how I get on.... 2 Quote
bud Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Good luck. But I can see you having to drill that out. If you can get some reverse drill bits. Sometimes it will come out while drilling it. Quote
