Hi all,

My Gilera DNA 50 is really annoying me now! When I go over 40 mph on it, it often cuts out

I have cleaned the carb, had it up jetted, had a new fuel pump and it still cuts out! It happens 8 times out of 10 when i go over 40. What happens is i can feel it going to die so i either keep it twisted back on i release the throttle. either way it dies or it dies then comes back to life then dies again etc. I have broken down about 15 times since i had it and its doing my nut in as i normally have to wait about 5 mins before it start up again!

I was thinking that it might need up jetting again?

anyone got any hints/tips

Thanks

At first I thought carb float height, but then do you mean it only restarts after 5 minutes of cooling down........

If thats the case Id say it was siezing. Is it correctly jetted? Have you increased the flow 2 stroke oil? That can also cause a 2 smoke to sieze!

Is the fuel tank breather working, is the breather pipe trapped? try it with the fuel cap off.

Report back..

ps, pull the plug and inspect it, what condition is it in?

I know this sounds strange but have you got an inline fuel filter?

I think so :?. I will ask my mate which knows stuff about peds. Someone else said it could be a fuel filter problem like it clogging

Am I right in thinking your bike is a twist and go jobby. So it'll be doing the same RPM at 40 that it is at 30?

is a twist n go. and yes, does about 7000-8000 revs a 30/40

just sounds lik an overheat

temperature is same when it is normal and when it is breaking down. the temperature is halfway up gage

it is correctly jetted (well the person who did it know what he is doing)

dono if the 2 stroke oil flow has been increase :?

dono if the breather pipe is trapped :?

I will ask my mate these questions!

I used to have a bike that ran fine until I went over 50mph. It'd run for a minute or two then it'd konk out and wouldn't start for 5 minutes. The problem was bits of paint that had flaked off in the tank. I assume that when I went over 50mph the vibration caused the bits to rise in the fuel and thats what caused the problem. I never had a filter on that bike and so I used to have to clean out the carb, which once done, the bike ran fine for at least twenty minutes even over 50mph and then it would start all over again.

when i had a service he cleaned out the carb which made it find for about 30 miles i guess. Also he put some tape over some of the air box holes as the previous owner had drilled too many holes in the air box. Before i ahd it serviced it would keep accelerating and de accelerating and didnt accelerate etc as there was too much air mixing with the fuel

Right I have had these parts replaced

- Spark Plug

- Fuel Pump

- Fuel Tap

- Up jetted

- Needle on the carb looked at and it was set ok

- I have also had new rollers in but this doest effect my current problem as it is for speed

It still cuts out! Weird thing is that it takes only about 30 seconds to start back up but its a pain when u break down on a duel carriage way!

Anyone else got any ideas of what else it could be? My mate said it could be heat seizing but the temp on my gage doesn't go up!

It's God's way of telling you to move up to a real motorbike as soon as possible

colud be anything really... check air inlet...

the airbox did originally have too many holes drilled by the previous owner. These have been covered up when i had it serviced so it should be ok shouldnt it?

starting to think its is heat seizing (so are a few other people) as the bleed screw for the oil was loose so not much oil was getting to the engine!

Right,

I have up jetted from a 58 (i think) to a 64. It is sluggish as too much fuel is is getting to the engine and is bogging. So hopefully this will fix it as i think it was running to lean. only cut out once so far as it bogged

thanks guys

hmmm if there is too much fuel getting to an engine .... that means it is rich not lean ? so in theory enlarging the jet will make it even more richer ?

It might be worth considering a breakdown in the ignition at high revs, this would cause cutting out but allow it to start again immediately. Check all the wiring from the stator and on the loom you may find one is worn through and shorting out on the frame or something else.
