Hi to you guys.

i have a 73 plate Spirit 125, but the battery has more or less died already with the original Chinese battery installed.

Can someone recommend a good replacement battery please. Maybe a MaH 9 output capacity.

I understand bike batteries

are pretty much hopeless in the current UK climate. I have had the current battery on a smart charger in the garage, it starts fine, then dies if I leave it disconnected after a couple of hours in the cold.

Any help would be really be appreciated

Thanks

Sounds like a cell or two died.

ones like yuasa ytx7 are good make sure it’s over 100cca. If its that bad still after changing it your bike has a short or a heavy drain going on

Are you sure that you don't have something draining the battery?

The cold doesn't kill batteries it's actually heat. They just work harder in the cold hence why a screed battery shows up in cold weather.

From experience a battery that is screwed and dropped a cell won't even start the bike after a charge! It sounds to me like you have something drawing power while the bike is off.

If its under warranty then I would be going that route too

A '73' plate is at the most 15 months old and your bike should therefore be under warranty, (I belive it's 60 Months Unlimited Mileage) which is also transferable. Have you spoken to your dealer yet about it?

I shall contact the dealership where I bought the bike. It is the original rubbish battery that came with the bike. I haven’t started it for over 3 months, there is nothing else connected to the bike to draw anything from the battery.

It is on a smart charger now, it was strange as it seemed like the dash and the headlight are fine.
My friend and I have done a modification to the gear selector pedal as I felt it was too low, so

disconnected the charger for maybe 2 hours max. Went to try and start bike, there was nothing.

Appreciate your comments regarding this issue.

Will try again tomorrow, when I get home from work and let you know how I get on.

Thank you

How did you modify the gear selector? I don't know if the Bluroc follows the same pattern as many other bikes in that you can't start the bike if it's in gear, (unless the clutch is pulled in), but could you have damaged the 12v connector?

Will the bike bump start?

We just drilled a hole and moved the gear selector up. Have tested it selects gears fine. The 12v connector seems fine, as I have moved the smart charger positive connection and it charges fine. No, haven’t tried bump starting it yet, I shall do if I can’t get the bike to start. Yes, you have to hold clutch grip in to start the bike.

😬 Why would you need to drill a hole??

If it was for height you adjust the circled  rod. If it’s major out and you don’t have adjustment left in the rod you can go adjust the clamp of the spline as the arrow points, one or two nonches/teeth are more than enough.

Unless you have really really small feet? needed the gap between the peg and the lever peg closer together?

which case then an aftermarket peg would have been a good idea or even a different bike if it’s a fail or fit you your biometrics…

Perhaps I should have made myself clearer. It was the 12v connector to your neutral switch I was talking about, i.e. the one that stops the bike starting when it's in gear that may have been damaged, not the battery connector, however whether that cut out switch is acticated from the gear selector or a relay from the dashboard neutral light, I really don't know. All that said, from what your later post says and from your photo if all you've modified is the linkage I can't see how that can have happened.

Thank you for making yourself clearer 👍 I can’t see how the neutral switch can be damaged as I haven’t touched

that part. All I have done is connected the negative and positive terminals of the smart charger to the battery.

All we have done is moved the gear pedal up slightly, on the metal frame bracket, and haven’t interfered with anything else. I am busy the next couple of days, so I won’t get a chance to test the bike yet. Shall let you know if I get the Spirit started in due course.

Appreciate your help 😊

Bike is fine. Started her up today without any issues. Let run for about 30 minutes.

Think it’s just the cold that got to the battery. Back on smart charger now.

Oil and filter change tomorrow 😊👍

Thank you for your help and photo. It’s the actual lever that was too far down, way to far from foot peg.  I was always leaning to change gear, my friends noticed behind me when riding.

It’s much better now, I shall take a photo of the gear peg mod we have done 👍
