  1. autosol is abrasive so you might want to be gentle, i used to have a cruiser and autosoled the hell out of it and the chrome did not benefit from me being over eager. I use it if something hasn't been looked after for some time or when i first get a bike then use a non abrasive wax when its up to standard.

  2. well this project continues, i have had problems removing photos from my phone and uploading to photobucket so haven't updated for a while.

After the valve cover bolt snapped in the cylinder head of the new engine (it passed compression test) it has become a bit of a rebuild with everything from new shock and powder coating to head gasket and valve clearances.

I will update some more soon but with the engine not back in the bike yet it has my full attention...watch this space..

  3. With the fairing off the next item was the exhaust

The all cables and most of the bolts were removed and after a lot of jiggling and a minor hand fracture it was out

So i spent some time checking over the new engine and decided to pull the plugs and found this

    http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/JDHunter83/Mobile%20Uploads/CB508FFF-F994-464A-9080-353E4401D7B1_zps3o4aiq1v.jpg

Surely not oil on the plugs again ! am i cursed or do I just worry too much ?.

So after I have helped alan tomorrow to felt my garage / sorry his garage built for my bike :-) we are going to pressure test the engine. If its junk then I will be throwing it back at the seller. :crybaby:

  4. ok a bit of an update.

everything has been great with the bike and Alan has been just awesome for putting up with my heap of crap and getting / keeping me on the road.

So after riding it from kent to wiltshire and back I was really happy with the bike and decided to do valve clearances etc.. ( I say me I mean Megawatt). I did a quick coolant flush today and noticed oil in the coolant, i then noticed bubbles in the expansion tank. Great that will be the head gasket then. there is no milky mess in the oil or coolant so hopefully i caught it early but i will have the head skimmed any way. so i stripped off the carbs to put in the dynojet main jets and decided to pull the spark plugs to find oil on the threads.

I'm not sure if this is actually oil (i am reasonably confident) but if it is I guess it is either the rocker valve gasket or worn rings etc...

some pics are below but megawatt will no doubt be speeding round with a trailer at some point

    any ideas ?

  5. So after the nice new exhaust she runs even worse with surging and lack of go below 7k and a lot of popping every time i roll off. I was expecting this having put essentially a straight through system on the bike so the next major job will be a carb clean and re-jet.

It is probable (apparently) that it is running lean which might be smoothed out by the adjusting the mixture screw.

All of that said it does start, idle and sound like a different bike. I really am happy to just get on and ride until the performance bothers me enough.

a few more pics that aren't that interesting or good but still.

This is the rubber cover for the coils. Depending on if you believe the stuff on forums this can cause a loss of 10bhp as they air box is sucking hot air straight off the head. I'm not inclined to believe it but it should at least stop crap resting on top of the coils.

Again all credit to Alan who has been a shoulder to cry on and a constant source of P taking.

  6. a bit more of an update on the bike..

After buying the bargain end can it turned not be a complete bargain as the link pipe had been abused and had to be cut short. This had a double negative of creating a loose fit and pulling the can in too tight which means it was touching the swing arm.

Problem solved by Mr Mega and a link pipe adaptor so perfectly made it sealed without a gasket.

Sorry about the dirty bike, the stainless headers were perfect and clean before going out in the horrible storm but hey i couldn't resist a ride.

as you can see it hangs just right as it were !

  7. another quick update to feast your peepers on !

you may have seen another post with a worried little me concerned about a pulse / clunk on the transmission when the bike was on the stand and in gear.

as the headers were off it was deemed sensible to remove the sump and get an eye full of the bits that turn around.

    http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/JDHunter83/engine/873A3ED5-BD1A-4F7E-A2C4-AE81E6C25E94_zpsiftyayjd.jpg

this is a close up of the filter in the sump, on this model they cant be taken apart but it was intact and in good condition so it was pulled out.

Next to come off was the clutch basket

this is the intact unit with the cover off

    http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/JDHunter83/engine/2CB198AC-5CC1-4460-88BB-988C2AA2CCE1_zpsaupdzwvo.jpg

after the spider and bolts are removed it really isnt clear how to remove the retaining nut

    http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/JDHunter83/engine/F19198C2-42F0-40A9-8689-7CC0F7DE3C66_zpsydrxzf5d.jpg

eventually I was convinced that pushing a flat head screwdriver into the big drive sprocket was a good idea to provide enough force to undo the nut. after cries of trepidation the nut was easily removed (of course)

    http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/JDHunter83/engine/8A3E04FA-7510-4313-B9D9-D5744D552549_zpssnml4ge1.jpg

The next step was to remove the bearing, i didnt get any pics of this but all you need to do is use pinch pliers to grip the bearing either side and pull it out.

Finally with the basket off you can see through and get a reassuring look at everything, all was well

    http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/JDHunter83/engine/70369902-1487-461F-A2BE-2C96494A2704_zpsxaslqqzh.jpg

    now to inspect the gears

    http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/JDHunter83/engine/AA1C48D1-0C8E-4FCF-9050-398C433C9683_zpskw84zpwl.jpg

With me cranking over the engine with a ratchet on the impulse ignition generator nut Alan stuck his head under the transmission and visually inspected each cog (after wiping oil from his glasses several times) and went through the gears making positive sounds. I also don't have the priceless picture of my face when the engine hissed on each revolution as i cranked it over without the oil in (I'm also learning not to react when i am the butt of northern jokes about my engine must have imploded). again all seemed fine so time to put it back together.

After everything has been put back together and the oil put back in its rightful place it was back to concentrating on the misfire after the new pipes have been installed.

I will ride this bike within a week even if its rolling down a road with the engine off !.

  8. Has anyone been to the Ron Haslam race school at Donnington and got any feedback ?.

Apparently the school has been booked out for the day for a few of us with all bikes and gear provided (cant wait). I am slightly nervous having not ridden for 5 years and my first sports bike is the old CBR that has been sat on Alans driveway for two weeks (owned it 3 weeks) so I am no where near good enough for a real track day.

That said my ambition in life has always exceeded my talent so I am hoping with a couple of other beginners on the same day I might not come back broken.

  9. I'm not one to try and pass problems onto other people but i would be tempted to weld if you are going to sell on.

Otherwise stick with the standard OEM item to avoid any balancing issues you may have.

If your going to keep it, like cool things, want the very best or just get carried away then join the club and get a set of stainless :D :D .

  10. A few more pics of the stainless system, again using the garage of sir Alan I'll fix it for staging.

These are the new pipes next to the old. The old pipes still have the rather large link pipe with baffles on it which is why they are longer and a seemingly different angle

    http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/JDHunter83/exhaust/C3DB3620-C92E-4BEC-A54A-7B4FFFE6AE51_zpsc8xcjhde.jpg

I was also lucky enough to pick up a triangle dan moto can for an absolute bargain

    http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab307/JDHunter83/exhaust/_12-2_zpsd8c427e4.jpg

unfortunately the link pipe had been hacked and after cutting down to make good it was just too slack for a good fit. not to worry alan and his garage of wonder jumped to the rescue and we now have a connector on order which should allow a tight fit without a gasket.

Unfortunately there was a consequence of all my new shiny items. When I started the bike it sounded rough and had a horrible mechanical type noise that sounded like valves. Now it hasn't been started after the carb balance and we haven't been anywhere near the valves so my new mate and me are convinced that it is just misfiring as the new pipes are almost straight through. When the new connector pipe arrives we can take it all apart again for another carb balance. Hopefully this will help resolve the issue but may not completely so there may be re-jetting on the horizon!, I really hope this isn't the case, it would be nice to just ride it for a while now (plus I didn't intend on throwing money at this straight away).

    Anyway, onwards and upwards !!

  11. instead of just trying to weld the holes closed which wont work it will just make them bigger if not very carefull use small plates of steel and tack onto the good metal futher down the pipe each side then dress it onto the pipe as you slowly weld it up worked on my 750 honda and ended up putting over 9 patches on that set of pipes

thanks, it was beyond my talent and my friend was a little unsure so I opted to buy a set of stainless just in case he burnt a hole through them.
