  1. Hi guys, I tried the smallest easy out to begin with. Then used the next size up.

As for drilling out. The hole now has biased more to the left now and is not central. If I use a drill the bit will follow this hole and take out too much material on the left and it won't match up with the clutch cover hole. Do you agree?

  2. Cheers guys, I've given up for the day after more heat, more gas and more torquing with the extractor. After quite a few hours it hasn't shifted one single bit!

One of my links shows this to be a common problem with this engine so it may well have happened before and been rethreaded.

Oh well. thanks for all the help.

  3. Okay - this bolt ain't going nowhere  Tried some heat and as much torque as I could physically apply with mole grips and no budge!

I've checked out my drills and they both can be run in reverse so I just need to get hold of a left hand drill bit or two. raesewell sent a link so might order online.

I reckon I'm as close/if not touching the crankcase already so a drill bit might just shave some off the casing. Can this hole be rethreaded for a larger bolt?

  4. Hi all. I tried to drill as central as I could through the bolt but I've obviously not done that. The hole looks really close to the crankcase cover! Check out the pics.

I've tried the extractor but to be honest I can't get enough torque to move the bolt in the slightest! I'm sure if I do manage to apply more torque the extractor itself is gonna snap.

    1. In the case of the crankcase thread being damaged - can that hole and the hole in the clutch cover be tapped to accept a larger bolt.

    2. What to do next? I could try a larger extractor but that will defo damage the crankcase as it will almost be the same size as the bolt hole. I could try a left hand drill bit but my drill will never be able to apply enough torque I don't think.

    any ideas guys?

  5. Hi all. the idea was to drop the oil today and see if anything materialised from the sump. i.e. 2 screws and a spring!

Firstly, the sump bolt didn't feel right as I was undoing it! There seemed to be more turning than there should be. When the bolt did come out it had been wound with ptfe. Is this the done thing?

Secondly, no bits from the sump. It looks as if there is a filter at the sump hole. The screws and spring will have to remain in the sump!

Thirdly. I was right to doubt the sump bolt. It has obviously been over tightened at some point and either the bolt thread is crossed or the crankcase? Hence the ptfe me thinks. The bolt just spins at the point where it should have tightened!

Is it a matter of putting fresh ptfe on OR getting a new sump bolt? We don't know if it is the bolt or crankcase crossed so what do you think guys?

  6. I bought a Laser screw extractor from Halfords today, before I saw any of your replies. I've also just read reviews for this kit and quite a few reviewers were not impressed at all after extractors snapped in bolts and screws  Not sure if I want to use it now as a snapped extractor in a bolt is just gonna make things worse for me.

  7. Blimey never thought about that  I guess if the bits, 2 screws and a spring, are in there they should stay there and cause no harm? What if ... what if I dropped a magnet in on a wire, that might pick something up?

  8. Thanks again Stu. In the morning I am gonna drop the oil. I'm hoping a couple of screws and a spring will fall out  Okay, very unlikely. The pin was sitting in the clutch casing so hadn't traveled far. It might not be easy locating screws/pin and spring for sale.

If you take another look at the pic, it looks like I will have to remove the clutch to do the job? Wotcha think?

    p.s. copied and pasted this.

Some chose to replace with NSU screws with 5mm x 20mm hex head bolts (to engage a few more threads) and 5mm serrated lock washers.

This might solve the screw prob'. just the spring then.

  9. Cheers, as you can see there are 2 hole underneath where the sensor sits. That part (and a spring) may have sat in one hole. Not sure about the other hole yet. Will try and see a parts diagram. The holes for the screws are in the casing. I'll discover more hopefully on the internet.

  10. Okay thanks Mega. I'll check out a parts diagram and surf the net and see just what is missing. I'm crossing my fingers that I'll find something dropping out of the sump. The oil looks pretty clean so maybe bits have dropped out with the last oil change and the seller wasn't aware of it. Otherwise I'll just have to hope that other parts aren't lurking around somewhere

  11. Hi guys, the advice is sound and I'll check things out in daylight in the morning. I have actually bought an extractor from Halfords now. I watched a video in a shop selling them a few weeks back, thought they looked and worked great, but thought I would never need one

A loonnnnnnnnnngggggggggg time ago I remember drilling a snapped bolt in a C15 then hammering in an allen key and turning it, it worked
