  1. If you want a pickup go for the Hilux, really is the best of the bunch.

Not sure what the L200 is like but I had a Shogun a while back and it was crap, problem after problem, think the L200 has a slightly smaller DID engine so may suffer the same issues?.

I think you're right about the hilux, it is i think the more likeable pickup. Less in my search range.

Thanks for the help all :thumb:

  2. Its very complicated, look it up on the web, Parkers website seems to do a good job of explaining it.

It seems most pickups are taxed the same as Transit ype vans, currenlty I think its about £270/year.

I had another look at Parkers.

    Screenshots show this...

So, say a 2003 L200, weighing in at 1.7 tonnes (according to auto trader) would be £270 tax a year, flat rate, right?

Seems £270 is worst case scenario for what I have in mind. Is it as simple as that and I just missed it?

  3. I appreciate the comments by the way :thumb:

Its a pick up or an suv ...

I'm sure my 10 month old daughter (and my dog) would prefer being dropped off in a pick up rather than a Quashqai!!!!

Tou don't want people questioning her parentage bo do you.

I "borrowed" an L200 warrior must be 15 years ago from Skanska to collect a set of wheels from the other side of the country.

It was dark and lashing it down and I did some accidental off roading somewhere out in the sticks. Had an absolutely brilliant time even though it was slow and handled like a turd on the road.

    Oh I don't worry about that :D

  4. A local guy in town has an Imported Left hand drive Dodge Ram which has been hugely lifted. It looks fantastic but I dont think I'd enjoy driving it on UK roads, especially rural roads around here

Back when I was 18 i went to good old 'Merica and drove a big old truck, very briefly. Was massive. I was in Texas so maybe this is where it all started for me!

I'd love to drive one on the roads here

  5. Pfft. I saw the thread title and came to share my wealth of ladykiller chat-up lines.

Trucks? One minute this forum goes all horse, the next it’s all serial killer, I genuinely can’t keep up.

Sorry to disappoint but you're welcome to give us your chat up lines anyway

  6. +1 for the Hilux.

I have owned 2 Navara`s and loved them both (couldn't afford the Hilux lol) then one Mits L200 and hated it especially being told by specialist garage when I queried gearbox fault changing from 4th to 5th "they all do that!" then had a leaf spring break and similar response from suspension supplier, so I find it hard to recommend the Mits I am afraid.

    Cheers

    Ian

    Thays good to know, thanks.

I'd be looking for one that has some sort of service history, as you would with car buying.

  7. I'd go for a Toyota Hilux.

My Dad had one from new in 1993 and it was so reliable, never touched the engine apart from servicing in 150k miles.

Still on the same clutch when he sold it 2 years ago.

I know its only fun but check out the Top Gear show trying to crash, burn, crush and drown a Hilux and it still started and drove.

I have seen that episode, its great, although I don't intend to do that much damage to it

I think that sort of stuff helps with the pricing!

  8. Its very complicated, look it up on the web, Parkers website seems to do a good job of explaining it.

It seems most pickups are taxed the same as Transit ype vans, currenlty I think its about £270/year.

I did look at parkers, it was explained well there but even the responses in this thread show the difference in information, all be it not a big difference so thats reassuring.

  9. Howdy,

So, I have always wanted to own a pickup truck, not because I own a company or business, but just that I want one for personal use.

I've been shopping around online to get some ideas - nothing flashy - just after something reliable. However I'm getting a bit mixed up with the road tax costs. Information online hasn't been the clearest and I keep getting different numbers.

From people who know or have one of the below, what's the road tax cost for one of these for personal use:

    Ford Ranger (2004 - 2006)

    Nissan Navara (2003 - 2006)

    Mitsibishi L200 (2003 - 2006)

    Isuzu Rodeo (2005 - 2008)

    Mazda B2500 (2006 - 2008)

    :thumb: thanks!

  10. TMBF legends, I might be made redundant, I'm looking at another job but its 150 mile round trip commute. Is it too much, but the job does include consecutive overnights away, sometimes.

Just getting a overview on what's normal.

I used to do a similar commute... all on motorways .. was awful, just awful!

I'd say it depends on how you feel about the job and what the journey is like.

  11. A slight tangent, but a while ago my dad had someone phone up his work shop asking to speak to person who pays the phone bill.

My dad replied "we don't have a phone" ... they then apologised and hung up

  12. Hunt is now firmly on again. Budget £1500. something like a v-strom, tdm850? If you see something about feel free to ping it to me so I can have a look. ideally east anglia - norfolk, suffolk as don't have the budget to travel miles to see dogs. preferable a twin. Main issue currently is I'm a fussy bugger and feel very meh about anything I've seen in budget

Is Mid-Kent out of the question?

Possibly doable, depending on bike and price, as would have to factor in transport. What's the bike?

SV650S (2000). No mot but had 2 advisories; rear brake pads and steering head bearing. In all honesty it's been in the garage for a year. I start it every now and then and run it up down the street ut it's wasted in there. Arrival of my first born put a stop to riding.

It's got extras .. heated grips, top box and other bits I'd throw in too.

    It's also... yellow
