Hmmm, Maybe i've been a bit silly, Would appear i didn't take out and clean the idle air jets (just reading through the haynes), Could this be causing problems?
-
It's getting to the point its cost me more than i care to think, and i'm thinking it may be beyond my capabilities. For example, if the compression is down then i'm looking at a new engine? (£200 ish) Just desperate to get a bike on the road and theres one on here advertised not to far away that im very interested in, would need to punt this first tho
-
I'll try check the clearances in the morning, Need to wait until i borrow a compression tester to do the rest. Feeling pretty sick with the petrol/oil smell from the bike so need to chuck it tonight. Wondering if it's worth the hassle, Might sell it for spares/repairs or break it. Bloody thing owes me circa £600 which im never going to get even close to

Thanks to Megawatt for his help. I've rattle through a few things, Swap coil leads over, Appears pretty much the same, However, I've noticed that with the choke open (about 3k revs, exhaust 4 gets hot and 3 is warmer. I've also taken the airbox off and sprayed carb cleaner into all carb inlets, On 3 and 4, theres a change in engine note, on 3 and 4, there isn't. If i put my hand over 1 or 2 the bike cuts out, It doesnt do this on 3 and 4. Megawatt has suggested taking the rocker cover off and checking the valves, Guess i better get my scrubs on and tell the mrs i may be a while Plug leads all on correctly aswell Any more suggestions appreciated

As you'll know from my posts. Ive been working on a xj 600s, L reg which had been sitting for a while. Done most things, But it will only fire on cylinders 1 and 2. I've checked everything i can, New plugs, Plug caps, Checked resistances on coil packs, compression seems ok. 3 and 4 do have a spark, But it doesnt seem to be doing much. The coil packs are split into 1 and 4, 2 and 3. So really doesn't appear to be that. I have checked most things that I can, The only common factor i can see between cylinders 3 and 4 is the red and orange wire which comes out of the back. I thought if that was faulty then i wouldn't get a spark at all, Maybe you can tell me otherwise. I'm really just looking for one last pointer before i throw the towl in and scrap it to try and get some of the silly amounts of money i've thrown at it back. Any suggestions?

Looking for some assistance with the clutch setup on a d600s 93 plate. I had the clutch basket off last week, going to to the roll pin mod, Long and short, it never happened, Put it all back together. Checking it tonight, When i pull the clutch in when its in 1st, 2nd gear etc the back wheel still locks out, Is that normal? cant remember what it was like before. If its not, can someone give me a pointer as to what i need to do?

I done mine with bike-it in paisley. Albeit, it was well before the 2 part test, they done blocks of a week including your test, the way it worked i think the test was the following tuesday, just the way the test centre there worked their days. In fact they have a place in kirkcaldy aswell. Here's the link, Really decent guys/girls too http://www.passwithbikeit.co.uk/prices.htm -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BLUE-Protective-M ... 3302wt_905 I sent them my sizes and had it in well under the 2 weeks, think it was about a week. Good bit of kit, Just doesn't have the fashionable name tags. Came with all the protection you need and is ce/tuv approved -

I bought a kit 2 years ago from ebay, Paid about 150. Cracking, Used it all year round, Although i wear waterproofs when its raining too. I'll have a look for the link -
Thanks for your help as always folks. Got my In laws friend coming over next week to have a look, Forgot about him. He reckons it's a fuelling issue so hopefully get it sorted and on the road
-
I had them out at that, But then turned them all in a slight bit aswell incase it was fuelling too much. It starts without too much choke aswell so thought maybe it was running rich. I'll get them off at some point and adjust the float height. I'll hope for the best
-
I guess the carbs will be coming off for about the 9th time! lol It took me 3 sets of carbs as well as my own to build a fully working set....Or so i thought lol Right, carbs off again and ill check float height etc and hope for the best. Im hoping to slight oil drip is maybe just a slight leak from the carb heater pipes thats maybe run through a little bit
-
Just been reading up on it. The coils are split inot 1+4 and 2+3 so that pretty much rules that theory out. I'd noticed the bike had a small oil drip coming from the top end of the engine at the front. It might be coming together now. Rocker cover gasket could cause that, and also cause oil to leak into the engine which would cause my smoky start ups and the petrol seeping through into the oil? would i be right in saying that?
-
carbs should be ok as i stripped and fully refurbed them, Choke seems to be ok aswell, responding appropriately when open/closed. Someone has suggested coil pack to me since its both 3 and 4
-
It just keeps getting better. the plugs for cylinder 3 and 4 are black/oily. Any ideas and ways to check? Also, managed to sheer a clutch pressure plate bolt, was going to fix the rattly clutch basket, didnt have a socket big enough for the main bolt, think its maybe 26-28mm, went a bit too tight putting them back on and sheered one so need a new one of them, fortunately got the stub out no bother
-
Phew, Didnt think about that, Knew it was water mixed with oil that caused it, but was concerned maybe petrol did too. Ill give it a run with fresh cheap oil, then do a full oil change with good stuff. Any suggestion re the smell of petrol? No obvious signs of leaks. Can smell it more as the bike is revved

Still working away on the project xj 600 s divi. Today got the new tyre valves on, gave it a wee run up and down the driveway. It smelled quite strongly of fuel. So I turned the mix down a little bit. Still doing it. Also, i decided to check oil etc, Couldnt see anything in the window, popped the filler cap. Uh-oh white gunk all over it and down in the clutch housing, pop out the clutch rod and ended up with the below. im now worried something is seriously wrong, left it a couple of hours hanging out, came back and its pretty much dry, thinking its maybe been condesation in it. Anyone got any ideas? or give me a step for a hint on anything else to check http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq88/stevie16v/IMG_0215.jpg

cheers dan. i'll run with it meantime. taken me 2 months to get it roadworthy. just needs an oil/filter change and fingers crossed
-
sounds like a plan, Saves me messing about if i have to do that. Cheers Whilst im on the subject. I noticed the back tyre has had a previous puncture plugged. IS this a safe enough fix?
-
both tyre valves on the divi are cracked and losing air. Needing to replace them. Never done it before, is it something i can do myself?
