  1. Thanks for the replies. Im just going to get it dip coated when I get paid. I took a lot of time sanding them but didnt prime or clean with thinners as id heard it wasnt that necessary for a simple rat job. Its easy to blame it all on me not doing that but surely it shouldnt be that difficult to spray a piece of plastic green. How could it go this wrong? Its green paint on plastic, its came out grey, uneven rough surfaces and brushing straight off in some places. Never again, seems difficult and expensive to say how cheap and quick it is to get it dipped or wrapped. Ive got bigger problems with it though. The clutch is too stiff, ive oiled the pivot arm which has helped a bit but im having trouble getting a replacement cable. I ordered one for my model and for some reason its too long. Nowhere states the length and theyre suprisingly hard to come by at a reasonable price. The abs/heated grip switch wires have snapped off but now the switche connectors themselves are knackered after I tried my hand at soldering. Theyre also not easy to come by. The fork seals are knackered because the forks are pitted. I havent looked into sorting that yet but I imagine its going to be a nightmare too.
  2. Well it's f**ked. In place the paint just brushes off and the fillers still showing through etc. I've used 6x300ml cans! I can't see any point continuing it and I can't afford to get them sorted so for now I'm skint and my bikes practically non road worthy for the foreseeable future. Not happy at all.
  3. I've put on about 6 light coats over the day. It looks grey in the photo but a sage colour irl, it's nowhere near the camo green on the can. You can't see it in the picture but the area I filled is appearing lighter through the paint. My local halfords only had 3 small cans, I only got a good 1 or 2 coats out of each one, so I'll have to wait until they are restocked. Have I done something wrong or should I not worry and keep spraying?
  4. Does anyone know what volts and amps it is? It might be possible to make a phone charger or some other gadget.
  5. The key turns fine it just doesn't do anything. I'll see if I can get it open when I get it out.
  6. My gs came with a broken ignition barrel, can't get an answer as to why from the previous owner. It doesn't look damaged and I've wired on a cheap ignition barrel and everything works fine. The problem is that I can't afford a bmw one, the cheap one won't fit 100% and there's no steering lock! So before I start work on it today I thought I'd ask if anyone knows a bit about ignition barrels and what the problem could be. I find it difficult to see how a simple switch encased in heavy metal could break with no visible damage.
  7. Guess I'll just leave it then, cheers. I've solved the other wires problem. The haynes manual says the '02 doesn't have heated grips or any orange cabling but the '04-'07s do and I have the diagram for it, the previous owner must have upgraded it but no idea yet why they are detached.
  8. One black and grey, one red and grey.
  9. I've also just found these 2. They must be for the abs/heated grip switches which don't work but the colours don't seem to match up with the abs and I can't find the heated grip circuit because I'm guessing it's got fancy technical name rather than heated grips. Any help is much appreciated.
  10. https://ibb.co/jLmRGa Could anyone tell me what this unused plug is for on my bmw f650gs. It's difficult googling something like this if you don't know what it is. It's under the seat, not sure where it disappears off to. And I don't know what that green crap is, it's rock hard so probably some sort of glue.
  11. Cheers. I'm not going to make any big mods just yet, it'll become rattier naturally as it ages but for now I just want to get rid of the ugly pale blue silver colour. Going with the camo green from halfords, not a camo pattern just the green and im going to get some bags to use as panniers from a local army surplus store.
  12. Ok I'm pretty much ready to go just need a little advice on preparation. I've got a few patches where the paint has chipped off, should I sand the loose edges down or will all the paint need sanding off anyway? I've got one of those paint and rust remover pads from halfords or should I use my electric sander? For the deep scratches I was going to sand them, fill them with the car bodywork filler from halfords and then sand again. Will that do it? I'm not going to paint over the black vents or bmw logo. Will normal masking tape do? I'm worried about the paint bleeding into the edges.
  13. I'll give that go this weekend and post some pics. Appreciate your help.
  14. Thanks. Got any pics? I assume Kobra is just a brand name, what sort of paint is it?
  15. Did terrible on my first cbt. I won't bore you with the whole story but my nerves and poor decision making on the road were embarrassing and dangerous, we returned before finishing it and I left. I almost gave up completely on getting into motorcycling but I went back and did it, I'm nervous about my big test and I'll probably cock it up first time round due to anxiety so that's half the battle with me.
  16. I'm looking for some advice on respraying the fairings of an f650gs I've just bought. Partly because it's scratched up and has areas where paint is chipping off but mainly because I just don't like the colour. I want to go for a military/rat look. Not a glossy metallic professional look but not an airfix paint look either. So probably a dark matt olive green. It's got to be durable, I intend to ride it all year round on all sorts of terrain so this is my main concern. Would it be wiser to just pay someone to do it or is a job of this standard done easily enough at home at a relatively cheaper cost? If it's easy and cheap enough to do myself then any advice on preparation, paints, coats, drying times etc. would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
