  1. +1 Or check if someome has fitted an inline fuel filter and its full of crud, sounds like fuel starvation.
  2. +1 Running a weak battery can cause reg/rectifier failures, which left can lead to cdi failures on some Suzuki's. Check the plugs/leads and then get some fresh petrol through the carbs first before you do anything else. There coulkd be some stale petrol thats gone waxy in them that needs clearing.
  3. As Colin said really, keep it clean, I always bypass mine though, they can be temperamental.
  4. Both wrong models ECU's Pete, they are for the carb models, Dan's is injected.
  5. I like you am not totally convinced this 'mechanic' was entirely honest with you Dan, I still say its nothing too serious, I have a mate who recently had something similar on a CBR600 and it turned out to be a bared wire earthing at certain revs causing the bike to cut out.
  6. Its unusual for an ECU to go down, have you been running the bike with a weak battery? Do you leave the ignition on for any length of time without starting the bike? As Akey says I reckon a short is more likely. I think you need a second opinion, or is there anyone you know who has the same model as yours so you can try there ECU before you part with anymore money?
  7. Ok, thats really close to me , and whats worse, i didn't know there was a cats protection league or whatever down there . Only pop down that street to tax my bike . I'll try to stop by if im not working, but chances are that i am . It isn't the cats protection league!
  8. .. but can you make sure I dont get Kev! Thankyou for that Munchkin! Seriously this is a very worthy cause, if you out on bike why bnot call in and have a cold drink and get a couple of raffle tickets? They usually have some half decent raffle prizes especially if you like a tipple.

Get the exhaust sealed as best you can, make the bike look as tidy as possible, and get it sold mate, then put the money to another bike. The gsx550's weren't the most reliable bike ever, dodgy gearboxes too, and there were never that many of them around either. You'll find something newer for the right money.
  11. Keep your standard exhaust can for when you decide to sell the bike, don't mess with it, buy one from ebay, either second hand or a cheap new one, theres plenty about.

Keep a look out on ebay for second hand stuff, also try ebay.com the American site, thats what I do and I get most of the stuff I'm after, it need not be a crisis. I know a guy who specialises in stainless fabrication and makes bike exhaust parts, I'll drop him a text tomorrow and see what he says, he may need your originals as a pattern though.

I'm a welder by trade, and I'm sorry to say, thats beyond repair, should you even manage to clag it together, and thats doubtful, the build up internally will restrict the flow of gases and lead to a build up of carbon. Sorry but its time to flash the cash and get a new zorst.
  18. Tbh, I can't think of any at this moment in time!
  19. Seriously, joking aside if you believe it to be the alram/immobiliser the bin is the best place for it, they are more trouble than they are worth, I nearly got stranded near Bordeaux once due to a Spyball alarm/immobiliser, but rest assured once I got home, it was "retired" to a safe place!
  20. I'd start with the kill switch, then try a spare plug in a plug lead, earthed to the head to see if theres a spark. Most alarm immobilisers work best when removed from the bike and placed in the nearest dustbin.
  21. All four coils wouldn't go down together, it does depend on how you tested them though, without being there its a tough call what to say. Do you know anyone with the same bike so you could swap components over to try and locate the fault?>
