Hello all, an update as promised.

Changed oil and filter today. Way too much oil in there, I suspect it was overfilled at the garage at the last service. Oil was very emulsified which would be consistent with the short runs I've been doing for months now.

I also checked the air filter, it was clean although a slight whiff of petrol in the air box and a dribble of emulsified fluid at the bottom of the air box - no residue on filter or in the air pipe. Cleaned the fluid out and also checked the spark plug, which was perfect in colour and correctly gapped, so combustion seems healthy.

I put in about 900ml of fresh oil plus a new filter, checked when engine warmed up (as per the manual procedure I always follow) with bike on center stand, the oil level is just under the maximum mark on the stick. I took it for a good run over 20 miles at mostly 50-60mph (beautiful evening for it. Forgot how much I missed doing this!), seems to run fine, rechecked the oil afterwards, no change in level or leaks noted.

I also checked oil pressure immediately after the oil change (as the manual advises), oil flowed out of the bleed bolt straight away after start which indicates healthy oil pressure.

I'll monitor the oil level and condition carefully over the coming weeks - lesson learned, never skimp on checks - and will update this thread accordingly.

Not sure. Seems to have gotten worse since the winter.

Thanks everyone - sounds like oil and filter is a good start. I suspect the short runs are the issue - normally it'll get a decent run along the A96 when I nip out to the folks or see friends along the road, however effing Boris and effing Nicola put paid to that. No longer a problem from this Friday onwards however. Guess what I'm up to this weekend...

It's injected.

There's definitely a smell of petrol in the oil so I'm getting concerned.

Hi folks, looking for assistance.

2018 YS125, air cooled, approx. 4000 miles.

Noted oil level rising of recent, to the extent when I checked today I had to drain out around 50-100ml (!) of oil out of the sump as it was literally flowing out of the fill pipe as soon as I removed the dipstick. The bike was serviced in August and has been ran most days on short commuting journeys (5 miles a day to and from work) hence the low mileage. It's not had a decent lengthy run for a good while due to lockdown.

The oil looks as if it could do with a change; its dark, opaque and smells of petrol. The bike has covered around 700 miles since the service. Not sure if this is moisture build-up with short journeys or if there's something more sinister at play here.

I haven't checked the air filter yet for blowback etc. (will do later on) and the bike seems to be running absolutely fine... only found this during regular checks (which I admit I've neglected recently for various reasons... lesson learned!)

I'm thinking about changing the oil and filter first of all, however I'm concerned there may be something else up.

Well, if its what you like, there's nothing wrong with that. A mate of mine in the Western Isles had one of the old X-Trails, same reason, massive hairy dog like a Wookiee so it was perfect.

He's also had a couple of Honda CR-Vs and swears by them.

For us, cos I've got the bike we only need one car, and its almost exclusively used by the Mrs. now for shuttling kids about and shopping. 12-Reg Mondeo which we've had since new, brilliant car.

All news these days is partisan propaganda poorly dressed up as "journalism", I find I have to read several sources and look in between the lines and the hyperbole/activism in order to work out the truth.

News Channels/Programmes - Biased, simplistic soundbites intended to shape folks' opinions; not worth the waste of RF spectrum.

Newspapers - alright for cleaning up oil spills, wiping your arse if the prats have ransacked Tescos of bogroll again, wrapping chip suppers in, lining the rabbit hutch etc. Otherwise utterly garbage and worthless opinions dressed up as "news" and a tragic waste of trees.

News Websites - Mainly for howling-at-the-moon absolutely barking nuts rabid politicos/conspiracy theorists; damaging to mental health and best well-avoided. Proper headbanger tin-foil-hat stuff. A waste of valuable bandwidth, processing power and server space.

Well that's my rant over 

Lots of snow up here this morning, rain however has dissolved most of it at low level. Ok on the bike this morninga s it was very soft powdery stuff that was turning wet. No ice. A9 still bad in the high spots though. Bit breezy too.

I've got some WP spray somewhere that's meant for boots. Haven't had to use it however as I've never had any issues. Usually keeping the kit clean avoids any problems. Good idea though for long-term protection, thanks!

Never had leathers but do try to look after my textiles. Hand wash as per manufacturer's instructions 2-3 times annually (basically when they start getting grotty, as now, so due) and left to drip-dry. Might be able to get the zip and velcro sorted so will see. Would be good to get another few years out of them yet as they've served me well so far.

Not into city/country stickers. Don't need to advertise where I've been. Which anyway, with my bike, is practically nowhere! 

Also not a fan of flags/politics. Mine are aviation-themed as that's my thing.

Printers are the bane of my life sometimes. Don't work, don't do what they're told, don't have the right cartridges installed, toner low, toner waste full, paper jams for no reason, non-existent paper jams...

Totally agree re: tech. It should serve to make life easier, not to replace people or to show off how clever some designer is. Good tech is valuable, bad tech is a curse worthy of landfill...

I recently found a free model rocket design software called OpenRocket. Its fantastic and has opened up a new dimension to the hobby. Learning so much about flight dynamics of rocketry and now moving from kit builds to designing and building my own designs. Great for use in the evenings when fed up watching Netflix and can't be bothered doing anything else in my above list.

Anyway, back on topic. My mate has motion-sensing lightswitches in their flat. As cool as this Star Trek/Red Dwarf-style stuff is I don't really see the saving or advances when all I can do is flick a switch on the wall...

Also getting up for a pee in the night is not good if you get blinded by the automatic lights... would rather have manual control!

I think if I had something like a VFR (or any other nice bike) I wouldn't dare sticker it, however having a run-of-the-mill tenapenny YS125 its nice to customise it a bit and make it unique.

EBooks are quite good and useful, however being a luddite I still think there's something very special about going to Waterstones and picking up printed books.

Also hurrefly flicking thru Haynes manuals with oily, greasy hands trying to work out how to get that feckin awkward part out is impossible with tablets! Paper all the way

You could say that. Temporarily quiet at the moment. Enjoying it however as the past few months have been mental. I'm sure it'll all kick off again soon enough...

Ahhhhh wireless printing, so useful and yet so utterly infuriating at times. The amount of bother I have at work with said devices does my blood pressure no good.

Been on the forum for a while but haven't logged on for some time, been too busy with work etc, didn't realise we'd changed to a new format until I logged on today!
