It started off as a full service and a bit of patching on the faring, the service and carb balance is done so mechanically it is done, now it has ended up as a full respray on the faring so have to do the tank as well, so thort as i am doing that i might as well do the forks and frame and half the engine while i am at it don't like to do things by half

Not too up on small bikes anymore but is it a 2 stroke or 4stroke? If it is a 2stroke then the exhort might be coked up and restricting the air flow out hence reducing the speed, i had it on a bike many moons ago

If it has a manual choke then it is carb, the tick over is a bit high and will not help when you are trying to do slow stuff, there will be an adjuster somewhere to slow it down possibly sticking out just behind where your legs are while you are sat on her, as above if you can get the haynes manual it will help alot

Bikes in bits at the moment so not out for a little bit, but am looking forward to getting out a lot more this year.

as the bike is nearly 10 years old with that few miles on the clock I would do the lot, valve clearences, fluid changes and all, I am in the midle of doing it my self at the mo

Cool, it is nice to see young people who want to tinker and lern god I am showing my age as above it will have to be a 50cc if you want to ride on your CBT at 16, but an engin is an engin, from when they first came out in ????? to now the basic principal has stayed the same, fule pumped in to a cilinder is set on fire that pushes the piston down and the next piston up! If you have got a year to play you have got time to find a knacker and do it up (obviosly look for one that isnt too bad) but YOU WILL DROP IT as with all lerning you will make mistakes so I personaly would start with a cheap bike and work from there as your experience and ability develop

It will have been well serviced as said above, yes it will have been abused a bit but if you can remember back to your/our test i was realy ginger with the bikes so it should be ok, best thing is to go and look at it, i would never buy any vehicle without looking at it first?

DO IT!!! I did my test at 30 and never regreted it I had riden scooters as a kid (1819) then hadnt tuched another bike untill I did my test admitedly this was pre the new test that you have to do today but I payed £650 for:- Therie test and training CD (wednsday) 1 day cbt training and test (Friday) 3 days training (direct access) (monday, tuseday and wednsday) test (Thursday) so in just over a week I went from never realy riding a bike to holding a full unrestricted licence! BUT just one point to make here with the way that I did it, I have a lot of mates that have riden for a long time and over the weekend inbetween they did take me to a carpark with no one arround to practice my turning in the road and once I had passed we all went out alot (yer new toy ) with one person riding infrount showing lines to take and one behind me who would when we stopped any were for a fag critisise enything that I had done wrong so in therie once I passed my test my real training began there.

Dont know how big the permit is? But how about one of the tax disk holders that are a tube that you role it in? Just a thort.

These sets are ok to start you off then slowly rebuild/replace from there, let me get on the computer in a bit and there is another one that i can point you towards that has got more in it. I acquired one a few years ago and they arnt that bad

Sockets A 3/8 drive set will do most jods but for wheel you will need 1/2 drive realy to give you enough tarqu it undo and do back up Spanners sets are normaly cheaper to buy (about £20 ish) where as individuals are normaly about £4 each, one set is a good starter but eventualy two is ideal because quite often you do need two but you can use a socket in most situations. Screwdrivers DONT BUY CHEAP ONES!! they just bend, I would hate to think of the number I have had over the years but 3 or 4 decent ones then a few others for abusing is always handy Other bits Pliers, side cutters (for cutting cable ties lol), tape mesure, steel ruler, stanly knife, swan neck grips (the type plumbers use), center punch, ball pain hammer,????? I think that should be a decent starting block, dont go for the cheapest on the market but the next up for now just to get the basics in place, then upgrade as and when you have the money. keep the old ones thow because you will always find jobs that you dont want to use you decent stuff for lol, as you go through you will find that you will need different tool to do certain jobs that you either need to buy or make and your kit will build up from there, I have been colecting mine for over 30 years with the inclushon of two sets through inheritance and I still find I am buying more, then again I am a total tool freak enjoy, cool xmass pressy

thort that I would start this thread to try and encorage myself to get a move on with this project, I have had this bike for about a year and a half so far and due to a few medical issues it has pritty much been egnored. it is a 1985 SRX6 import, kickstart only single cilinder 600cc cafe racer main issues with the bike are:- wont start!!!!!! couple of slight dents to the fule tank slight surface fust to small areas of the frame but for a 28 year old bike it aint too bad. the first thing to do was to try and get it to run! first off the batery was knackerd, so ebay here we come, £25 later and in comes a new batery, so great all the electrics work, light, horn, indicators etc. turn the enition on make shore the dead man swich is off (yes I am a plonker and have swarn at bikes for not starting when the dead man swich has been flicked ) kick it over and?????? nothing. so out with the spark plug and check for a spark (this is a bit difficult whilst trying to kick it at the same time ) and we have a spark but no fule in the cilinder???? so after a lot of scratching of heads and pulling and bending we get the twin carbs out (yes two carbs for one cilinder?) and as expected they are full of gunk, clean them out and put them back in, fule valve onto prime position with new fule and wate for it?????????? nothing. and that is where it has been for the last two monthes, hence this thread to kick start myself into getting it finished for the thundersprint next year
