Guest Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 As we were riding out they were still coming in four and five abreast!Bearing in mind the rideout was as a double tribute a) the mothers of the fallen and b) to thank the people of Wootton Bassett for their continuing support and respect for the corteges as they pass through the village, I was genuinely moved to see a woman holding a banner that said "Thank you Bikers".I got quite moist as I rode through WB - the main street was lined shoulder to shoulder about 5 or 6 deep in places - very emotional and a fabulous display of mutual respect. And the Plod were there in numbers and the ubiquitous helicopter was flying overhead - I couldn't help thinking that if they'd put the money it cost to ponce around in a totally unecessary toy in the pot they'd have earned a lot more respect.Fazer Pete and Jota arrived about an hour and a half after I did - brilliant effort on their part to do that distance in one day - and I bet Jota had segs on his arse by the time he got home.Rounded the day off by visiting family and taking my 16 year old bike-mad cousin for a pootle on a big bike - he only has a moped Quote
firestorm Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 As above...fantastic day out but it was spoilt by the lack of information being passed out at the Airfield.. we was there at 10;00 and in a queue of bikes for 3+ hours with no movement. they where letting rows of bikes out 2 at a time. Problems began to arise as when one row was leaving some people who had only just got to the Airfield was jumpming onto the back of the row that was leaving. meaning those that had waited their turn then had to wait even longer.Once we got moving thougfh it was a great day. well supported by the locals of WB, finished the day off at The Red Lion in Avebury.. One last thing....I gave one bike Cop a wave and a smile as he did his bit and held up the traffic,,,he gave me that look as to say F**K You... thanks mate. Quote

Yeah the po-faced plod were in stark contrast to the happy smiling and welcoming onlookers who were lining the route to and through Wootton Bassett. They looked as if they all had mouth ulcers or haemorrhoids.I thought I was the only one who noticed. Quote
cruz Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Well I would like to praise the Police and the marshalls who gave their time FoC to enable this event to take place. Knowing the majority were there from 0600 yesterday and some spent time on Saturday setting up.I also saw some sour faced, miserable bikers there.Firestorm we may well have been on the same ride I arrived at just turned 0930. Guest Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 The organisation was brill - I fully respect the contribution from all who played a part in the smooth running of the event - but the coppers/PCSOs that I saw all looked like they were sucking lemons!I got there at about 09:00 and was in the third row, near the far end of the landing strip - well, about 300 yards away. Quote
cruz Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 I was top end in about the 6th or 7th row we left at about 1300ish.Before we Left Magor services M4 we had Gwent Police visit and wish us a safe ride also 3 on bikes who had the 'thank you' flags flying from their bikes. Quote
Guest Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Well I would like to praise the Police and the marshalls who gave their time FoC to enable this event to take place. The Police in attendance were all working for free??? Never knew that, respect to them if thats true! have to say though I personally didn't see one happy copper all day Nice to see ya again Para, I got home 7pm and every flamin joint either ached or had seized up lol A mad motorway dash there n back isn't good for the body but that ride from the camp to Wooton was fantastic for the soul A little more planning and they could have sorted more food/drink stalls along the whole length of the runway (bringing in even more money), I was well parched by the time we got moving around 12 and would have paid a small ransom for ANY sort of drink or burger! Outstanding day all round though, I'll never forget the banners the waving the applause and the shouts of "THANK YOU!" from the locals. brilliant stuff Quote
firestorm Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Firestorm we may well have been on the same ride I arrived at just turned 0930. Sounds like we shared the same row mate,,or at least one over, we got away about 13:15, Quote
TC Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Looked like you all had a great day down there.Well done all of you for the great turnout Quote
Fazer Pete Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Was a superb day out, though i would like to forget the ride there and back as quickly as possible. The ride through the town , though, will stay with me for the rest of my life. All the banners of support, the applause..............Amazing!!!Cheers for the company Derek, was handy looking for your 'Bird in the mirrors all day, kept me awake ha ha ha haGood to bump into you again Phil Quote
Rosie Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Been following this with interest and sadly couldn't make it.... watched the news vids through tears.Well done to all that were there.just wondering..... had the Police been briefed about possible bomb threats and that was why they were behaving as they appeared??Would have been a great opportunity for some mindless organisation and absolutly catastrophic for everyone else.Just a random thought Quote
Guest Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 Was a great day. What an atmosphere!Must be what it feels like being Valentino Rossi on a parade lap Quote
Guest Posted March 15, 2010 Posted March 15, 2010 It was a great day and the only gripe i would have is with the mindless as*holes who queue jumped by riding off the runway and across the grass...a lot of people were getting pretty pissed at having to watch this going on especially when many had patiently waited for hours..but well done to the cops who turned up on bikes and in a van and put a swift end to it...the majority of police on duty were SCs (specials) so were unpaid volunteers and it was a long day for them to stand around in the sun breathing in petrol fumes..everybody did a great job and im sure they will take on board any mistakes made and improve on them for next years event which im sure after this will definately go ahead.. stelmer Posted March 16, 2010 Posted March 16, 2010 I was there and made several videos....Youtube channel MrStelmerI stayed at Box Hedge Farm B&B, a fantastic place and an equally fantastic full breakfast. Was booked for the 11.00-12.00 slot and got out around 4pm....The bike went well, only blowing a brakelight bulb on the way home. Started to overheat in Wootton but it kept going. I spent a grant total of £0 on petrol as I cashed in my nectar points and planned my journey via 2 Sainsbury's petrol stations. Quote

tinkerbell Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Well done Biker Chick and to everyone else that took part.Think today it is hitting home now after watching footage of the ride as to how big it really was. My time slot was 9.00 - 10.00 and the bikes were already rolling in. The speeches and presentations were brilliant and when Tim sang his song I don't think there was a dry eye anywhere on that airfield.ooooooooops eyes filling up again........... Quote
Guest Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 My slot was 9:00 - 10:00 but there was no information regarding announcements or the singer so I was blissfully unaware of what was going on. Quote
