Just ordered all the bits to use my IPhone for on bike sat nav.

Holder :

Nice and small, waterproof, and can still use the touch screen too.

Power :

Battery to accessory socket then accessory to USB. I'm sure you can get a direct battery to USB but I couldn't find one

Bluetooth headset:

Can use your own headphones with this

And for using the touch screen with your gloves on :

For the software itself I have Co Pilot UK edition. Pretty good app, at £25 it's half the price of the Tom Tom. Euro edition is £50 I think.

Should have all the bits in the next week or so. Will post up how I get on.

I'm also downloading CoPilot as soon as i get paid... I'm just putting the iPhone in the seethrough bit of my tank bag, and i have some "in-helmet" speakers already, so just gonna plug them in. 12v socket is gurrrdd! I did mine straight to the battery too, and find it works great :) Edit, PLEASE post back here with how good the software is, and what iPhone u have?

Only used the software once so far, for a trial as my car has sat nav built in. It seems pretty good, has a bike mode. There's probably usage vids on youtube to have a look before you buy. I couldn't personally recommend it either way as I haven't used it enough yet.

I have the kriega tank bag which doesn't have a window. Also I think it's better mounted on the handlebars, don't have to look down as far, although probably not much difference.

I have the 3GS IPhone. Had the 2 and 3g's too. Haven't noticed the s being that much faster in normal use tbh, but it might be more noticeable with resource hungry apps like sat nav.

What headset do you use cobbz? or is it build in to your lid.

Oh there just some cheapy (£2 delivered!) speakers i sewn into my balaclava :)

I've heard good things about CoPilot from friends so I'd certainly buy it if I felt I needed it.

As much as I joke about getting lost, I'm pretty good at finding my way places, even though my UK geographic knowledge sucks - I'm a planner and remember what's important when I need it. As such I've just sold my TomTom and I'll be trying the iPhone using just Google Maps in the map bag for the final stages of the journey. Point me in the right direction in the city and I'll find my way there kinda thing.

Google Maps and especially street view totally rocks. I used it the other day to see what the sign off a roundabout says and it didn't name any of the towns I'd have looked for when I actually rode the route. Thankfully I could follow those it did list instead. Rockin'!

I currently use the google maps on my iPhone xD I'm upgrading to the co-pilot cos i really need turn-by-turn sometimes, and its annoying to have to stop, get glove off, unlock phone, start up maps, zoom in, work it out, put phone away, glove back on, re-enter traffic... bleh :)

Do let me know how u get on with that conductive thread... might buy some!

Downloaded Co-Pilot tonight, will report back here tomorrow with my first thoughts out on the bike...

May be intersted to see what you guys think of it as the wife has just sold out and got an i phone, she's been thinking about a satnav to help when travelling for work might be something she might want to try!

If shes in a car, she'll need one of those holders, cos sat nav reception for the iPhone isnt that good in cars... It needs to be right under the windscreen :)

Right, did my first test today... First, i went off to stretford with the headphones in. Found the sat nav kept my position well, worked fine... Told me when speed cameras were coming up, played the noise e.t.c... Only thing is, there isn't lots of warning for turns e.t.c. Maybe i've set it up wrong! It just doesnt talk to you as much as others do... but its still very useable, and extremely helpful. I'll never get lost again!

Used it after to go up to leigh to meet Dannyringking, then used it to get back home from rivington, with no headphones. Just put it in the see-through bit of my tank bag as usually, and kept an eye on it. Although, i think i'll rig up a holder soon... Have to look down too much in the tank bag, would rather it be higher up so i dont take my eyes off the road too much. But yeah its great, works fine.

Crashed once or twice when opening it up, but once its open its fine and doesnt crash e.t.c... Will keep this post updated if it ever fails me :)

The holder looks very good, pitty its so expensive but if needs must i spose !

You lot really need to jailbreak yer iphones ... TomTom is great .. every bit as good as the proper dedicated kits.

i run TomTom on my iphone in the car, which works fine, id be very tempted to buy one of those cases though. (there out of stock atm i notice)

Yeah, when I ordered they expected them to be back in stock this week. Now it's been pushed back to the middle of May :(

That applys to all UK stockists too so can't re-order from somewhere else. There's no good alternatives either so will just have to wait.

I have an old 3g IPhone that I am going to jail break when I get round to it.

Frankly, i value my warranty too much to be messing about with jailbreaking :P When the two years are up, i'll do that then.

It doesnt invalidate your warranty at all, its only software, which is a piece of piss to uninstall and return to normal, leaving no trace whatsoever !

TomTom on the Iphone is fantastic, I got it as soon as it came out. There are also some very good OS mapping apps. I have the whole of Wales on mine at 1:50,000.

How did we manage before iPhone's lol
