Anyone got an info on these? They have a nift pump that blows the cheeks up, for added comfort! Good idea - or just a gimmick??

I'm looking at the exo 450. :?: :?: :?: :?:

Saw these last year when they first came out in a shop near me. When I asked the bloke in the shop selling them about it he said they were a gimmick and no amount of daft air bags are a substitute for a helmet that fits properly.

This is the bloke who's supposed to be selling them, doesn't inspire confidence really.

aren't hjc now doing a similar thing with one of their models?

As for scorpian heard good things about it as the fit is supposed to be perfect when inflated to your face

Purely my opinion you understand ...

A gimmick, my reasoning?

I am concerned that , ok, the fit must be good when it is inflated, but what happens when it hits the floor?

Or hits the floor with your head in it.... and in an off, your head generaly hits the floor more than once ....

Or what happens when the inflation thingy fails? Going to replace the helmet?

Anyone remember Reebok Pump trainers? Are they still around? A success obviously then ....

hmmm, the negative comments are all "in my opinion" and "a bloke said", nothing that actually says yes I've got one and here's why you should or shouldn't buy one...

Nothing wrong with airing your opinion mind. It would just be nice for an owner to confirm it.

The airbag will most likely have been tested in crash scenarios. Its not in Scorpion's interest to sell something that fails and kills riders, can you imagine the MCN article.

If you think about your helmet, its nothing more than a hard, brittle shell covering a polystyrene layer wrapped in cloth to make if comfy. If that can survive a fall then a bag filled with air should manage as long as it can withstand a reasonable amount of pressure.

Oh and Reebok pump came back with pump 2.0 about 5 years ago. I have a pair and they are unbelievably comfortable, best trainers I've ever owned. Looks like they've stopped selling them again. If I'd have known, I'd have stock piled while they were still for sale.

American football helmets have used a bladder for years now for the whole head, with foam inserts too and I've never had a problem with them.

I've got the one in your 1st pic. Amazing helmet, very comfortable, perfect fit everytime. Found my old caberg ones after wearing for a while tended to give too much, so I had a snug fit in shop, then it molded (like its meant to) then after a while more it started having a tad free play (couple of mm at most but some nevertheless).

Pluses

The scorp one is perfect fit everytime no problems. Feels very secure and also blocks out a lot of general wind noise. If you like to listen to music (headphones) while riding its good as you can pop them in, then pump it up and still get tight fit. If you need pillion spares this is good as it can still be used by you no problem afterwards and more importantly, you know the helmet your pillion is wearing is going to offer good protection (assuming general size of helemt is right).

Downs

The air vents dont seem to do much, although have never really noticed much from vents in any helmets. cleaning bugs off can be annoying, as they get stuck in said vents quite often.

Overall i'd recomend them to anyone, I dont think I'l be getting a helmet without this function for a long while. Fozzie and gin have both tried it on, loved the idea, feel and comfort of it and I think fozzie is planning on getting himself one when he can.

Hmmm, thanks for that, I was slowly going off the idea, thinking it was a lot of money for a gimmick!

Would you recommend getting the size helmet that fits with the cheek pads deflated?? I wasn't sure what to do with that?

I tried the M on and pumped up and also let it out and it was fine! They didn't have a S in stock to compare, so was unsure what to do?

So it would be £160 well spent??

Also it was the Matt lid I was prefering, but have been told by a number of people that the Matt lids are not the best to go for? Any problems on that respect????

Thank you

Matt lids are different?!?!?!

I liked the design, went with that one didn't relise there was a difference between the two.

I tried on a M and it was a very tight fit (almost uncomfortable) which then gives a bit like all helmets so that its a snug fit. This is identical to all other helmets I have ever bought. THEN I inflate the pumps and it becomes a very snug perfect fitting helmet. Had it close to a year now, no major problems leap out.

For you personally, If M was a snug fit, IF you can, hold out and compare it to a S just so you know whats best for you (fit it like you would any other helmet). if its loose before pumping it up i'd personally get the next size down.

Since I bought it at same time as I bought my bike (and i'm a cheeky git) I paid 100 for mine, but would deffo pay 150 (you must be able to haggle them down a little?) for it.

Hope this helps if you have any other questions or if I wasn't clear just ask

I'm assuming the matt black is the least visible which is why people are advising against it. Can't think of any other reason why it would be different :?

If people like the idea and are happy with it then go for it. i won't be buying one though. I've coped admirably for the past 11 years without inflatable cheeks in my helmets; i don't see why i should need to start now. It's just fixing something that isn't broken to me :?

Thanks again, No I mean the fact that people have said Matt lids are hard to keep clean and hard to clean??? They show up marks e.t.c! I do prefer the matt!

I managed to haggle to lid + Black visor for £160 so basically a free visor and if I go for the matt design it would be £10 off as well!

The reason I'm liking the inflatable cheeks, is my helmet I have now is far too big, but used to fit! I've lost a lot of weight and thats made such a difference, so I don't wanna be in that position again, with a perfectly good helmet thats too big.

I will hold out and try the S! So basically your saying if it's a little snug still go for that! But I'm guessing if it's 'tight' and presses on my head too much then stick with the M! I'm always unsure on weather it will end up too big once bedded in!

Thanks again!!! :D

Valid points 2fast2soon!

Glad to hear from an owner too spafe, although I must be getting old cos I'm still not sold on the idea

And yes Ruthie, matt lids are a bugger to clean and keep clean. At least mine is/was .....

Look good though :thumb:

i don't ahve any trouble keeping my matt lid clean baby wipes area amazing they will clean near enough anything, which is scary when you think what you do actually use them for :?

Posted

I get throught tons of baby wipes so, that shouldn't be a problem! Theres always a pack under my seat for the road kill on the visor!

Posted

Does anyone know any places that will let you take helmets out on a test ride? I really like my current helmet but the wind noise was a bit of a shock. Luckily my earplugs are really good.

Posted

Baby wipes you say? hmm, hadn't considered that it was harder to clean due to it being matt, I figured it was down to fiddly vents. this will be experimented with tonight when I go round a mates with a sprog of their own. :)

ruthie. With the fitting of the helmet, Do what you'd normally do. I CAN wear my scorp without pumping the cheeks up and I think it would offer me proper protection, as it fits me, BUT the pumps mean reduced wind noice, an even more snug fit and proably greater protection. think of it as an extra rather than a replacement for good fitting.

Also I understand you say you've lost a lot of wieght, but my cheeks are made of bone, I could lose every bit of fat on me and still be left with same cheek bone structure, so what did you lose to change your head shape so drastically

Dan. yes you are old  :P

HA! Spafe! I lost 3 stone!!! At lot of difference trust me! Also, I think I probably got a lid that was just right without taking into account that it would give, the helmet I've got is the only one I've had. Hence getting your advice as this is only the 2nd one I've brought and don't want to make the same mistake!

I'm going to try the S on tomorrow, hopefully they will have it in stock!

Let us know how you get on with the baby wipes???

Also anyone every tried Back to Black the matt version, would that be any good????

my cheeks are made of bone

What kind of freak are you? Cheeks are made of flesh not bone. You sound like the thing from the fantastic four

"It's clobbering time..."

Posted
i'm pretty sure everyone has cheek bones.....

I concur. However most people (everyone bar you) have cheeks made of flesh that sit above the part of the skull called a cheek bone

Now, now boys!

Spafe is obviously skinny! Cheeks are made of bone! but if your fat so are your cheeks!!!!!

Anyway, nice to hear the baby wipes work! Think I'll be getting one of these!!!!
