Anyone ever heard of this before?

Yesterday my bike started playing up, became REALLY loud, like there was no exhaust and it started running on one cylinder.

Turns out, it blew a spark plug, right out of the bike! There was just no spark plug left! Waiting for new spark plugs to arrive, then i can see if its ruined the thread left inside the engine.

But yeah, has anyone heard of this before?

If the thread has gone, can it be fixed?

Cheers, CobbZ

Always happens to you don't it Cobbz

Never heard of it before... if it has blown out, yes it can be repaired, but might cost a bit ..

Have you done anything to the plugs previous? I wonder if at somepoint the thread has been stripped, allowing it to blow out.....

Coud have been the previous owner of course (more likely)

sounds like the thread has gone if so you will need to have it helicoiled

You Been ragging it again Dan.

Anyway Mate i know someone not to far from you thats got a spare bike. (Very nice one as well)

Having seen my old cylinder and valves after the previous owner had helicoiled it i would remove the head. When the valves and cylinder surface get huge and deep scratches in them it will cause hot spots and ruin your engine.

if you got too long to wait, why not take the spark plug out of the other side and try it now, if it's gone you can start making plans to get a helicoil.

a coil which is inserted to replace the bust one, normally the thread needs enlarging to take a coil, the coil is insert and the tang broken off, ready to accept the original fitting... other option a to have it re-tapped and a larger bolt inserted, which isnt an option in a lot of cases, like plugs, drain plugs etc.

Cobbz, had this happen to a mate with a Honda CRX, just shot out under the hood, think it was to do with a HT short, needed new lead and plug.. (thought he'd been chosen ... lol)

Cheers fellas!!

Yeah, i thought of trying the spark plug thing, but for one i don't have a spark plug socket, and two, i had to leave the bike at my GF's house (right near work).

WF, i don't think the HT broke, because it can still run, just on the one cylinder. Unless theres a different one for each spark plug? :(

Yeah Dan, always bloody happens to me :P:P Luckily, my repairs so far have been really quite cheap, I really hope this plug has worked loose rather than blown the thread...

To get an idea of costs, how much do you think a helicoil would cost? Including them taking the head off e.t.c...

Cheers all :)

it all depends on time!!

most bike shops wont helicoil they would take the head off and send it to someone else your best bet is a small bike shop that needs the work to keep going they will do the full job in house!!

i would say about 4 hours work atleast depending on the setup of the bike ie cam chain and cams etc etc

Cobbz,

Theres 2 leads (HT) on a twin, one to each cylinder, but one coil.. hence why the coil is firing one cylinder.

but get a non franchise garage to take a look.

my apologies, but having had the ER5, which is the same engine as the GPZ500s, I knew his had 2 leads. and as that is the bike in question, I wasnt going to go into further detail.

no worries

i look at things like this: someone else might be looking for info and see this and think ooo i have a twin so only need one coil!! so best just to cover your ass and cover all bikes so no come backs  unless you are been bike specific ie the GPZ has one coil and two leads

UPDATE:

the thread has indeed been stripped. So I'll need the head taking out and being helicoiled.

How much can I expect this to cost? Might not be able to bloody afford it!!

you can get away with the helicoil being inserted without removing the head, but will need to ask the missus for her vaccum cleaner and hose attachments..... or by using a magnetic wand. (no, not the Paul Daniels's one... or Harry Potters...)

phone an independant and ask for a quote...

Only know of this happening once before, was on quite an old bike that had had a thrashing and it was assumed that the thread was crappy and worn.

It's either that or someone desperate for a plug nicked it!

Update:

Sorted. Took it up to Cadishead Bikes (google it, great place). Didn't get helicoiled, just put in a threaded insert.

Not too sure which would have been better, but im not fussed, it runs again!!! :)

Well, what he put in wasn't quite a helicoil, it didnt have the "coil" to it lol, it was just like a long ring. Maybe just not a brand name thing :P

Just gotta go and put the new exhaust gaskets on now...

:)

if it looked like a tight coiled spring, then it was the equivalent of a heli-coil
